Ifa Fuyū's Search for Okinawan-Japanese Identity
This paper focuses on the crucial role played by Ifa Fuyū, the "father of Okinawan studies," in articulating ideas related to Okinawan-Japanese identity. Starting with a brief overview of Ifa's life and work, especially his pioneering work in Ryukyuan linguistics, the author observes how Ifa's progressive and reformist perspective shapes his discourse on religion, language, and history. The author then moves into analyzing a recently discovered w…
C. S. Peirce’s Definition of Symbol in §14 of the New List
The main body of this paper consists of a commentary on §14 of Peirce’s 1867 paper “On a New List of Categories,” in which Peirce derives the concept of Symbol within his general theory of representations. Rather than aiming at a comprehensive study of the New List, the paper closely observes how Peirce arrives at his definition of Symbol in the New List by elucidating its main ideas. The paper suggests that Symbol occupies a unique conceptual lo…
Pattern Memory and Resistance to Extinction in Double Alternating Reinforcement
Interval between acquisition and extinction (A-E interval) was varied in order to investigate effects of regularly alternated partial reinforcement on resistance to extinction and to assess the notion of pattern memory which was suggested on the basis of single alternation study. Random alternation (RA) and double alternation (DA) groups were trained with extensive trials and then extinguished under one-day's (RA1, DA1) or 23-days' (RA23, DA23) A…
Persistent Resistance to Extinction of Single Alternating Reinforcement after Long Acquisition-Extinction Interval
Six groups of rats varying in reinforcement sequence [single alternation (A), random (R), or continuous (C) as a control] and interval between acquisition and extinction [A-E interval one day or 23 days] received extended acquisition and then extinction in a straight alleyway. Patterning effect during acquisition was not clearly demonstrated in Group A. Under one-day condition, the partial reinforcement extinction effect (PRE) was found, and Grou…
Shift Performance and Resistance to Extinction in the Partial Delay of Reinforcement
To test the reinforcement-level view on the basis of the stimulus-continuum assumption, performance due to a shift of the reward delay was investigated. The groups were designated: 30-0, 0-30, 30-30, and 0-0, where the first numeral in each case indicated the length of delay (30 sec or immediate) in the Preshift phase, and the second, in the Postshift phase. All groups were trained under 53.3% partial reinforcement during acquisition and extingui…
The Effects of Distribution Pattern of Partial Reinforcement on Resistance to Extinction
Three groups of rats (Total N = 21) were trained and extinguished in a straight alley to investigate the effects of a shift of reinforcement percentage upon resistance to extinction. Two partial groups were there which received gradually increased (gI) or gradually decreased (gD) ratios of reinforcement (55% schedule) in the course of training. A third group was a continuous control group. The three groups attained asymptotic performance at the l…
