Stigmatization as a Social Control Mechanism for Persons Living with HIV and Aids
Stigmatization contributes to inequity by marginalizing persons living with HIV and AIDS (PHAs). In this study we examined the stigmatizing practices in health care settings from the perspectives of PHAs and health care providers (HCPs). A qualitative design, using a participatory action research approach, was used. Interviews and focus groups were completed with 16 aboriginal and 17 nonaboriginal individuals living with HIV (APHAs and PHAs) and …
Increasing capacity for knowledge translation
The potential for research to influence policy, and for researchers to influence policy actors, is significant. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of health services researchers engaging in (or not able to engage in) policy-relevant research. Semi-structured telephone interviews were completed with 23 experienced researchers. The results paint a complex and dynamic picture of the policy environment and the relati…
Complexity and Team Dynamics in Multiple Intervention Programmes
Psychologists engaged in public health research and intervention will become more involved in multiple intervention programming approaches. Managing innovation and complexity is a challenge when the team members come from different disciplines, organizational cultures and research perspectives. This report captures some of those challenges with a participatory, capacity-building, community-based intervention over research stages. We detail succes…
Challenges of Participatory Evaluation within a Community-Based Health Promotion Partnership
Evaluating multiple-member partnerships is always a challenging task. This article is based on our experiences using a participatory approach to evaluating a community-based health promotion research project. “Mujer Sana, Comunidad Sana—Healthy Women, Healthy Communities” was partnership-based, multi-sector, multicultural, and participatory. We describe our experiences working with participatory methods to evaluate the partnership per se. Three e…
Improving Accuracy of Transcripts in Qualitative Research
Everyone who has worked with qualitative interview data has run into problems with transcription error, even if they do the transcribing themselves. A thoughtful, accurate, reliable, multilingual transcriptionist with a quick turnaround time is worth her or his weight in gold. In this article, the authors examine some transcription circumstances that seem to bring about their own consistent set of problems. Based on their experiences, the authors…
Transdisciplinary Work with Psychology from a Population Health Perspective
One of the important implications of a population health perspective in public health is an increase in the need for transdisciplinary ways of working. The Community Health Research Unit (CHRU) is presented as an example of an environment where psychology and psychologists work with other disciplines to conduct applied research in population health. Research activities were examined to identify how the disciplines collaborate and to provide evide…
Abusive Behavior in the Workplace
Dealing with hostile interpersonal relationships at work has been the topic of many popular books and workshops. Yet, with the exception of sexual harassment, there is surprisingly little mention in the organizational research literature on the nature, extent, and costs of abusive work interactions. These more frequent, more tolerated, and, thus, more damaging interpersonal interactions involve hostile verbal and nonverbal nonphysical behaviors d…
