Dissociation between Perceived Discrimination and SDOH among Black and Hispanic Stroke Patients
A significant dissociation between PRD and SDOH burden was found among minoritized stroke survivors. Black participants in our study reported the highest PRD, which was more than twice the levels of PRD observed among Hispanic participants despite a similar SDOH burden. White participants had the lowest PRD and SDOH burden. Addressing PRD independently of SDOH may be an important component of interventions designed to reduce race-ethnic dispariti…
Music as a strategy to improve hypertension and stroke management
The designathon produced various music genres, including afrobeats, rap, and R&B, with lyrics deemed feasible and socio-culturally appropriate. This suggests that music interventions tailored to Nigeria could enhance public awareness of hypertension and stroke prevention if scaled up
Development and Validation of a Stroke Literacy Assessment Test for Community Health Workers
Community health workers (CHWs) are increasingly being required to perform complex health care activities, especially in community cardiovascular disease and stroke prevention. However, currently, there are no psychometrically validated instruments for assessing CHW competencies in these roles. This article describes the development and validation of the stroke literacy assessment test (SLAT)—pertaining to the Life’s Simple Seven (LS7) risk facto…
Proof of Concept for a Novel Social-Emotional Learning Programming
Despite the known benefits of social-emotional learning (SEL) for children, evidence-based, culturally sensitive, and multisensory SEL programs are limited. To address existing challenges in SEL for underprivileged youth, we developed the multicomponent B.E. M.Y. F.R.I.E.N.D. (BMF) framework that capitalizes on (1) cultural tailoring to foster acceptability, (2) tools and strategies to build healthy habits, (3) parental engagement using the Child…
Analysis of self-efficacy for stroke recognition and action from a cluster randomised trial evaluating the effects of stroke education pamphlets versus a 12-minute culturally tailored stroke film amon…
Background: Because early recognition of symptoms and timely treatment of stroke can reduce mortality and the long-term effects of such events, efforts to make many people both aware of these symptoms and knowledgeable about what to do when recognising them are critical for reducing impacts from stroke. Objectives: To assess the impact of a stroke preparedness film (intervention) and stroke preparedness pamphlets (usual care) on self-efficacy for…
Call to Action
Structural racism has been and remains a fundamental cause of persistent health disparities in the United States. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and multiple others have been reminders that structural racism persists and restricts the opportunities for long, healthy lives of Black Americans and other historically disenfranchised groups. The American Heart Association has p…
A Multisensory Multilevel Health Education Model for Diverse Communities
Owing to their enormous capacity to improve health and save lives, effective health promotion frameworks have been at the forefront of public health research and practice. A multilevel focus, as exemplified by the Socio-Ecological Model (SEM), is one common denominator among these frameworks. The SEM highlights important social and ecological influences on health behavior by delineating the different levels of influence. These include public poli…
Using Qualitative Methods to Assess the Conceptual Equivalence of the Spanish and English Stroke Action Test (STAT)
Members of racial/ethnic minorities, in contrast to majority groups, experience disparities in stroke risk factors, recognition, evaluation, and treatment. This article describes the use of qualitative methods to examine the cultural and lifestyle appropriateness, clarity of item-wording, comprehension of item intent, and conceptual equivalence of the developed Spanish and the revised English Stroke Action Test (which includes three additional at…
