  • Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy and Adverse Childhood Experiences

Open Access•Patrícia da Rosa, Ananda Stullich et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2025

These results highlight the long-lasting consequences of adversities encountered in early life, which can shape the smoking behaviors of women even during the critical stages of their own pregnancy. There is a need for tobacco control interventions among the most vulnerable that extend beyond the traditional services and address deeply rooted factors from past experiences

Open Access•Tim Bärwalde, Laura Hoffmann et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2023•References: 23

Purpose The construct of social participation is still not clearly defined. To reach a better understanding of social participation, the perspectives of adolescents must be taken into account. This study explores the adolescent concept of social participation and expands knowledge of the meaning of subjective components of the term. Methods Thirty-four semi-structured interviews were conducted with adolescents with and without physical disabiliti…

  • Inequalities in adolescent self-rated health and smoking in Europe

    Irene Moor, Mirte A G Kuipers et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 48

BACKGROUND: Although there is evidence for socioeconomic inequalities in health and health behaviour in adolescents, different indicators of socioeconomic status (SES) have rarely been compared within one data sample. We examined associations of five SES indicators with self-rated health (SRH) and smoking (ie, a leading cause of health inequalities) in Europe. METHODS: Data of adolescents aged 14-17 years old were obtained from the 2013 SILNE sur…

  • Improving Rehabilitative Care of Methamphetamine Users in Germany

Open Access•Laura Hoffmann, Lisa Buchenauer et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2019•References: 46

Methamphetamine is one of the most frequently used drugs worldwide. In Germany, methamphetamine use has greatly increased in recent years, presenting the rehabilitative treatment system with new challenges. In this study, we identified deficits and possibilities for optimization in the field of medical rehabilitation. A total of 39 interviews and two focus groups with experts along the treatment course of methamphetamine users were conducted. Our…

  • Is being a “small fish in a big pond” bad for students ́ psychosomatic health? A multilevel study on the role of class-level school performance

Open Access•Katharina Rathmann, Ludwig Bilz et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

This study revealed that class composition in terms of PSP was differentially associated with students ́ psychosomatic complaints, depending on their individual PSP. Findings highlight the vulnerability of students with poor PSP placed in classes with a higher percentage of students with good PSP. Results of this study therefore indicate a need for initiatives for low performing students from teachers and school staff in class

Mirte A G Kuipers, Rosaline de Korte et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2016•References: 50

BACKGROUND: Studies on the effects of school smoking policies are inconclusive and there is no research on whether the effects of school policies vary by educational level. We examined the association between school smoking policies and smoking behaviour among adolescents aged 14-17 years in Europe and assessed educational inequalities in these associations. METHODS: Data on 10,325 adolescents from 50 schools in six European cities were obtained …

    Open Access•Katharina Rathmann, Irene Moor et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 11

This study aims to determine whether educational differentiation (i.e. early and long tracking to different school types) relate to socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent smoking. Data were collected from the WHO ‐Collaborative ‘Health Behaviour in School‐aged Children ( HBSC )’ study 2005/2006, which included 48,025 15‐year‐old students (N boys = 23,008, N girls = 25,017) from 27 European and North American countries. Timo‐kolja Pförtner, Sebastian Gunther et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 44

BACKGROUND: Recent research has emphasised that the challenge in researching socioeconomic differences in adolescent health cross-nationally lies in providing valid and comparable measures of socioeconomic position (SEP) across regions. This study aims to examine measures of occupational status derived from the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO), alongside commonly used affluence measures in association with adolescent se…

Adrian Spoerri, Kurt Schmidlin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 18

BACKGROUND: Household measures of socioeconomic position may better account for the shared nature of material resources, lifestyle, and social position of cohabiting persons, but household measures of education are rarely used. We aimed to evaluate the association of combined educational attainment of married couples on mortality and life expectancy in Switzerland. METHODS: The study included 3,496,163 ever-married persons aged ≥30 years. The 200…

BACKGROUND: The relative contribution of different pathways leading to health inequalities in adolescence was rarely investigated, especially in a cross-national perspective. The aim of the study is to analyse the contribution of psychosocial and behavioural factors in the explanation of inequalities in adolescent self-rated health (SRH) by family wealth in 28 countries. • Explaining socioeconomic differences in adolescent self-rated health

Matthias Richter, Else-Marie Karlsson Strese et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2012•Cited by: 7•References: 44

The findings show that the main explanatory approaches for adults also apply to adolescents. The direct and indirect contribution of material factors for inequalities in self-rated health was stronger than that of behavioural and psychosocial factors. Strategies for reducing health inequalities should primarily focus on improving material circumstances in lower affluent groups

This article draws a line from historical concepts of different urban ecology traditions to recent approaches of urban ecology. The overview presented here emphasises the following two aspects: 1. Urban ecology traditions have a close connection to the scientific and social context of their time as well as to the prevailing urban structures; 2. urban ecology research approaches have undergone a "scaling-up", i.e., approaches on different scales a…

The hygiene hypothesis postulates that the increase in atopic diseases may in part be due to diminished exposure to microorganisms. But it is unknown which type of infection does render protection. An epidemiological study was conducted in Leipzig, Germany, and its rural county, involving 3347 school starters. Two types of infection were considered: (1) gastrointestinal colonisation ( Helicobacter pylori detection using in vivo [ 13 C] urea breat…
