After recurrence surveillance recedes: Professional accounts of how non-recurrence concerns become service work in cancer survivorship aftercare
After cancer treatment, suspected recurrence often retains a clear service form through appointments, tests, specialist review and escalation. Other treatment-related concerns, including swallowing, nutrition, bowel, sexual, functional and psychosocial problems, may persist or emerge as scheduled surveillance recedes. We examined how professionals described such concerns becoming easier or harder for services to recognise and act on. We conducted…
ESL teachers’ metalanguage as evidence of their metalinguistic knowledge of the English intonation system
The present study investigated six experienced English as a second language (ESL) teachers’ metalinguistic knowledge of the English intonation system through analysis of their metalanguage. Participants’ metalanguage related to intonation was collected while completing three tasks: (1) a semi-structured interview, (2) a simulated teaching demonstration, and (3) a pronunciation needs assessment. Qualitative content analysis revealed information re…
A Detailed Analysis of How Physiotherapists "Give" Reassurance for Patients' Concerns in Back Pain Consultations
Reassuring patients with low back pain to reduce their concerns is important for good clinical practice. However, guidelines provide little information on how physiotherapists should best deliver reassurance. This study explores how "reassurance" is enacted by physiotherapists and back pain patients during an initial consultation. The research setting was primary care. Twenty initial physiotherapy consultations were video-recorded and transcribed…
Commentary: “Vowel Quality and Direction of Stress Shift in a Predictive Model Explaining the Varying Impact of Misplaced Word Stress: Evidence From English” and “Exploring the Complexity of the L2 In…
The aim of this commentary is to propose word prosody training as scaffolding for learning the English intonation system. Drawing on Ghosh and Levis (2021), I discuss the pedagogical implications of research on vowel quality in relation to word stress instruction and the nested nature of vowels within syllables, which make up prosodic words. In light of Liu and Reed, (2021) findings on the structural complexity of intonation (i.e., interrelated a…
Physiotherapists' Approaches to Patients' Concerns in Back Pain Consultations Following a Psychologically Informed Training Program
Guidelines advocate a combined physical and psychological approach to managing non-specific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP), referred to as psychologically informed practice (PIP). PIP is underpinned by patient-centered principles and skilled communication. Evidence suggests that a physiotherapist-focused style of communication prevails in physiotherapy. There is a recognized need for observational research to identify specific communication pract…
