Breaking the Silence About Compulsory Social Measures in Switzerland
So‐called compulsory social measures (CSM) represent a dark chapter in Swiss history. Hundreds of thousands of children and adolescents from families affected by poverty were placed in foster families and homes, or used as labourers on farms. These decisions could hardly be appealed. Many minors suffered traumatic violence in out‐of‐home placements. In 1981 the relevant laws were redrafted and the practice of CSM was officially stopped. Neverthel…
Von Generation zu Generation
How do the daughters and sons of victims of coercive social measures suffer? Based on biographical inter-views, this anthology describes the consequences of repeated violence for the second generation and their efforts to prevent the third generation from also being affected by it. Until now, nothing was known about the damaging effects of such measures on offspring in Switzerland. In this book, the authors show that the second generation suffere…
Perinatal loss and parental loneliness
Advances in perinatal medicine, present increasing numbers of women with difficult decisions about their pregnancy. We explored the views of 5 parents and 5 perinatal healthcare professionals regarding late termination of pregnancy following the principles of qualitative content analysis. Parents deciding on whether to (dis)continue pregnancy needed more time and decisional support. Decentralized care and lacking continuity between caregivers led…
You Can Only Give Warmth to Your Baby When It's Too Late
This study on end-of-life decisions in extremely preterm babies shows that the parents under study experience a multitude of stressors due to the immediate separation after birth, the alienating setting of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), the physical distance to the child, medical uncertainties, and upcoming decisions. Even though they are considered to be parents (assigned parenthood), they cannot act as primary caregivers. Instead, the…
Criteria for the Health Promoting Effect of Landscape
Landscape has recently been designated as a health promoting resource. However, it has proven difficult to identify the aspects of landscape that promote well-being and health. Based on a recent publication that summarized the existing evidence on health promoting landscape effects by analyzing more than 120 primary studies, we have developed a new evaluation method for a health impact assessment of public urban and natural areas. The method is c…

Online Health Information Seeking in the Context of the Medical Consultation in Switzerland
A growing number of patients search for medical information on the Internet. Understanding how they use the Internet is important, as this might impact their health, patient-practitioner roles, and general health care provision. In this article, we illustrate the motives of online health information seeking in the context of the doctor-patient relationship in Switzerland. We conducted semistructured interviews with patients who searched for healt…
