• Narrative democracy: Notes on (the failure of) Chile's constituent process

    Open Access•R Cordero•ARTICLE•Thesis Eleven•2025•References: 1

Democracies today face intensifying political polarization over the principles and values that should structure social life. Amid interconnected global crises, public discourse is saturated with narratives which depict democracy as rapidly degenerating or nearing collapse. This article proposes to shift the focus away from the dominant narratives of democratic crisis to a less visible yet equally urgent phenomenon: the crisis of the democratic na…

  • Claims of ownership, claims of dignity: Moral narratives on the right to housing in Chile’s constitutional referendum

    Open Access•Raimundo Frei, R Cordero et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2024•References: 28

In September 2022, Chileans overwhelmingly rejected the draft of a new constitution to replace the inherited from Pinochet’s dictatorship. Existing explanations attribute the failure to a mixture of ill-designed procedures, political dynamics, and ideological distortions and fake news. However, we argue for a different interpretation, emphasizing the collision of normative worlds in the struggle for demarcating rights. Through narrative analysis …

  • Demarcating rights in divided social worlds: An introduction to the moral economy of constitutional struggles

    Open Access•R Cordero, Raimundo Frei•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 64

This article outlines a framework for studying practices of boundary-making as pivotal to the various ways in which “rights” become objects of contention and sources of narrativization in contemporary constitutional democracies. Firstly, we reconsider the dynamics of boundary-making that underline polarization by drawing on the notion of “moral economy”. This concept is well-suited for making sense of how social groups draw lines of demarcation t…

  • Mythical Infrastructuring: The Work of Stories in the Making of the Chacao Bridge, Southern Chile

R Cordero, Aldo Mascareño et al.•ARTICLE•Nature and Culture•2023

The very nature of large-scale infrastructure projects—long design and construction periods, high investment, and impact on social and natural spaces—makes them prone to socioecological and technical conflicts. These conflicts materialize in stories that become keystones in the making of infrastructure. In this article, we analyze the infrastructuring power of stories by drawing on the case of the Chacao Bridge on Chiloé Island in southern Chile,…

  • The making of neoliberal legality: The legal imagination of business elites and the ‘social constitutionalization’ of ‘free enterprise’ in Latin America

Open Access•Ricardo Gamboa, RICARDO VALENZUELA et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Society•2023•Cited by: 1

The ‘free enterprise’ system is a normative cornerstone of many Latin American political constitutions and a formative principle of neoliberal legality. However, the way in which this economic model shapes the legal field and conceptions of the rule of law remains understudied. Though lawyers, judges, and legal experts have played an important role in the legal buttressing of the free enterprise model, this article explores the shaping of neolibe…

    R Cordero, Aldo Mascareño et al.•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 30

Drawing conceptual boundaries is one of the defining features of constitution-making processes. These historically situated operations of boundary making are central to the definition of what counts as “constitutional” in a political community. In this article, we study the operations of conceptual delimitation performed by the Constitutional Commission (1973–1978) that drafted the 1980 Chilean Constitution, the trademark of Augusto Pinochet’s di…

  • A Method of Mobility: Dialectical Critique and the Work of Concepts

    R Cordero•ARTICLE•Critical Horizons•2020•References: 4

This article discusses dialectics as a method of critique which takes concepts it primal object of inquiry. Through a reading of Theodor W. Adorno’s lecture course Introduction to Dialectics, it argues that for dialectical critique concepts are living organs of social reality whose work must observed in terms of constellations of experiences and practices, and through specific historical sites and social processes. The article reconstructs three …

  • The Negative Dialectics of Law: Luhmann and the Sociology of Juridical Concepts

    Open Access•R Cordero•ARTICLE•Social & Legal Studies•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 6

This article proposes to read Niklas Luhmann’s sociological theory of law from the perspective of what may be called the negative dialectics of law: namely, the irreconcilable tension between law as a mechanism that reproduces institutional orders and stabilizes normative expectations, and law as a medium that empowers transformative action and motivates social innovations. Drawing on this tension, the article advances an interpretation of the cr…

  • On the reflexivity of crises: Lessons from critical theory and systems theory

Open Access•R Cordero, Aldo Mascareño et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2017•Cited by: 10•References: 17

The main aim of this article is to offer a sociological concept of crisis that, defined as the expected yet non-lineal outcome of the internal dynamics of modern societies, builds on the synergies between critical theory and systems theory. It contends that, notwithstanding important differences, both traditions concur in addressing crises as a form of self-reproduction of social systems as much as a form of engagement with the complexities and e…

  • Crisis and Critique: On the Fragile Foundations of Social Life

    R Cordero•BOOK•Crisis and Critique•2016

Fragility is a condition that inhabits the foundations of social life. It remains mostly unnoticed until something breaks and dislocates the sense of completion. In such moments of rupture, the social world reveals the stuff of which it is made and how it actually works; it opens itself to question. Based on this claim, this book reconsiders the place of the notions of crisis and critique as fundamental means to grasp the fragile condition of the…

  • The temporalization of critique and the open riddle of history: On Reinhart Koselleck's contributions to critical theory

    Open Access•R Cordero•ARTICLE•Thesis Eleven•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 18

The main goal of this paper is to offer a reading of Reinhart Koselleck's work as an ally of critical theory. My contention is that, despite customary accusations of Koselleck being an anti-Enlightenment historian detrimental to social criticism and emancipatory politics, his investigations on the semantic fabric of modern society may actually expand our resources for the critique of domination. In order to make this argument plausible, I reconst…

  • It happens ‘in-between’: On the spatial birth of politics in Arendt's On Revolution

    Open Access•R Cordero•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural and…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 8

This paper proposes a reading of Arendt's On Revolution that focuses on the spatial nature of the revolutionary phenomenon. It advances an understanding of political foundation as the ‘opening’ of a topos for political existence. I draw on the key notion of the ‘in-between’ that Arendt uses to depict the basic structure of the world as a space of coexistence and plurality. In the first part, I elucidate the anti-essentialist meaning of this term.…

  • Crisis and critique in Jürgen Habermas's social theory

    Open Access•R Cordero•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 16

At a time when ideas of crisis and critique are at the forefront of public discourse, this article seeks to understand moments of crisis vis-à-vis critique as a key feature of critical social theory. It addresses Jürgen Habermas's strong claim that this relationship accounts for a 'model of analysis' concerned with grasping the 'diremptions' of social life. To elaborate this reading, the article pays attention to the main problems Habermas identi…

  • Vínculo social, juventud y trasgresión normativa: Aspectos conceptuales y metodológicos en el estudio de la cohesión social en América Latina

    Open Access•Margarita Palacios, R Cordero•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2010
