Short‐term psychodynamic infant–parent interventions at Child health centers
Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) demonstrate efficacy of parent–infant psychotherapy, but its applicability and effectiveness in public health care are less known. The method followed is Naturalistic study evaluating Short‐term Psychodynamic Infant–Parent Interventions at Child Health Centers (SPIPIC) in Stockholm, Sweden. One hundred distressed mothers with infants were recruited by supervised nurses. Six therapists provided 4.3 therapy sessi…
Assessment of Change in Psychoanalysis
A systematic method is presented whereby material from a full course of psychoanalytic treatment is analyzed to assess changes and identify patterns of change. Through an analysis of session notes, changes were assessed using the CHange After Psychotherapy scales (CHAP; Sandell 1987a), which evaluate changes in five rating variables (symptoms, adaptive capacity, insight, basic conflicts, and extratherapeutic factors). Change incidents were identi…
Reflective functioning, affect consciousness, and mindfulness
Aims: Concepts of mentalization, affect consciousness, and mindfulness have been increasingly emphasized as crucial in psychotherapy of diverse orientations. Different measures have been developed
Heterogeneity in Responses to a Universal Prevention Program
A randomized controlled trial of mother–infant psychoanalytic treatment
Mother–infant relationship disturbances occur in three domains: maternal distress, infant functional problems, and relationship difficulties. They constitute common clinical problems. In Sweden, they are usually handled by nurses as part of public Child Health Centre care. Severe cases are referred to child psychiatry services. This randomized controlled trial compared two groups of mother–infant dyads in a Stockholm sample. One received only Chi…
A randomized controlled trial of mother–infant psychoanalytic treatment
A randomized control trial was performed on 75 dyads in Stockholm, Sweden, with infants under 11⁄2 years. It recruited mothers who worried about the babies, themselves as mothers, and/or the mother–baby relationship. Two groups of mother–infant dyads were compared. One received only Child Health Centre care (the “CHCC” group) while the other received mother–infant psychoanalytic treatment plus CHCC (the “MIP” group). Significant treatment effects…
From Psychoanalytic Narrative to Empirical Single Case Research. Implications for Psychoanalytic Practice
Social and emotional training in Swedish classrooms for the promotion of mental health
Mental ill-health is a major problem worldwide. It includes depression, aggressive behavior, feeling down and alcohol and drug abuse. Since all children go to school, the school is an obvious arena for health interventions. A set of educational techniques named Social and Emotional Learning, based on the use by teachers of cognitive and behavioral methods, which teaches students self-control, social competence, empathy, motivation and self-awaren…
Self-Analysis and Post-Termination Improvement After Psychoanalysis and Long-Term Psychotherapy
Long-term follow-up studies of long-term psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy or psychoanalysis are extremely rare, and few have focused on the post-treatment process itself. In the Stockholm Outcome of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy project, one of the results was that patients in psychoanalysis continued to improve after termination to a higher degree than patients in long-term psychotherapy. In this study 20 patients selected from the p…
Who Should Receive Subsidized Psychotherapy
Three groups of judges representing clinical, political, and laypersons' perspectives were given the task of prioritizing patients for subsidized psychotherapy within the Swedish health care system. The authors documented the judges'decision-making processes in think-aloud protocols and analyzed them qualitatively, focusing on the conflict between the urgency of a case and its suitability for treatment. In an earlier statistical analysis of the s…
Can Psychoanalysis Become Empirically Supported
The article discusses the application of the ideas of evidence-based medicine or empirically supported treatment to the field of psychoanalysis. The author argues that empirical support is gradual rather than categorical, and that the randomized clinical trial (RCT), which is commonly heralded as the appropriate method of support, confounds patient suitability factors with treatment 'as such'. As a consequence of the exclusive reliance on the RCT…
Varieties of Long-Term Outcome Among Patients in Psychoanalysis and Long-Term Psychotherapy
This paper reports the main findings of a large-scale study of subsidized psychoanalysis and long-term psychotherapy. More than 400 people in various phases, before, during and after subsidized psychoanalysis or long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy, were followed up for a period of three years with personal interviews, questionnaires and official statistics. Our analyses revealed progressive improvement the longer patients were in treatment--imp…

Note on choosing between competing interpretations of cross-lagged panel correlations
Campbell's cross-lagged correlation technique (Campbell & Stanley, 1963) has recently been discovered to offer competing interpretations (Rozelle & Campbell, 1969; Yee & Gage, 1968a, 1968b). Specifically, the technique in itself does not discriminate between congruent effects of one of the two variables involved and incongruent effects of the other. As Rozelle and Campbell (1969) note, This greater equivocality must be accepted as a definite redu…
