When I Look in the Mirror, I Want to See a Healthy Body”: The Lived Experience of Young Previvors, Bilateral Risk-Reducing Mastectomy, and Body Image
Breast cancer is a significant cause of cancer death in young women in the United States. Inherited pathogenic variants, like BRCA1 and BRCA2, contribute to an increased lifetime breast cancer risk in this population. For women with a known pathogenic variant but without a previous cancer diagnosis, also known as "previvors," the bilateral risk-reducing mastectomy (BRRM) most effectively reduces breast cancer risk. However, this surgery often cau…
Affect as a foundational psychological process for spirituality and empathy
There is growing interest in understanding the manner by which spiritual experiences, religious beliefs and behaviours, and prosocial traits (e.g., empathy, altruism) are related. Research has recently focused on determining those psychological constructs (e.g., affective, behavioural, cognitive) that are common to these related constructs, although the specific relationships remain unclear. The current study evaluated relationships among spiritu…
Home-based Comprehensive Assessment of Rural Elderly Persons: The Care Project
CONTEXT: Home-based comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) has been effective in urban areas but has had little study in rural areas. CGA involves medical history taking, a physical exam, and evaluation of functional status, mental status, cognitive status, gait and balance, medications, vision, extent of social supports, and home safety. We sought to develop and pilot a model of rural home-based CGA to determine whether successful urban models…
The Church Family and Kin: An Older Rural Black Woman's Support Network and Preferences for Care Providers
Although kin and church are considered premier support sources for rural elders, few scholars have undertaken descriptive studies to explore the nature of rural Black elders' support networks and their preferences for in-home service providers. In the case study described in this article, methods of support network analysis and descriptive phenomenology were used to analyze data from five lengthy, open-ended interviews with a 94-year-old rural Bl…
Health perceptions and healthpromoting behaviors among elderly Catholic nuns
This article reports on a descriptive study of perceptions of health and health promoting behaviors among diverse elders. A tool combining open-ended questions, Wallston's Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) tool, and Pender's Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP) was used to obtain data on definition of health, health locus of control, and health behaviors, respectively, among elderly retired nuns. The 50 respondents scored highe…
