Some Preliminary Responses to “Beyond Single Stories”
In the following responses to our Winter 2019 First Word essay, “Beyond Single Stories: Addressing Dynamism, Specificity, and Agency in Arts of Africa” (African Arts vol. 52, no. 4, pp. 1–6), Leslie Wilson, John Monroe, Salia Malé and Marguerite de Sabran, Maxime de Formanoir, and Joshua Cohen separately expand upon our thought that we must reimagine language for writing and presenting so-called historical arts of Africa to disparate audiences. The Rise of Valley Fever
Coccidioidomycosis (CM) is a fungal infection endemic in the southwestern United States (US). In California, CM incidence increased more than 213% (from 6.0/100,000 (2014) to 18.8/100,000 (2017)) and continues to increase as rates in the first half of 2018 are double that of 2017 during the same period. This cost-of-illness study provides essential information to be used in health planning and funding as CM infections continue to surge. We used a…

The effect of prophylaxis on pediatric HIV costs
The objective of this study was to determine and compare the cost to treat HIV(+) and HIV(-) pediatric patients both before and after HIV prophylaxis became the standard of care. Retrospective chart review of a pediatric HIV/AIDS specialty clinic's medical charts was conducted for clinical and healthcare utilization data on 125 children diagnosed from 1986 to 2007. Mean HIV-related costs were compared using bootstrapped t-tests for children born …
Medication coaching program for patients with minor stroke or TIA
Background Patients who are hospitalized with a first or recurrent stroke often are discharged with new medications or adjustment to the doses of pre-admission medications, which can be confusing and pose safety issues if misunderstood. The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility of medication coaching via telephone after discharge in patients with stroke. Methods Two-arm pilot study of a medication coaching program with 30 pati…
Pathologizing or Validating
We employ a feminist discursive lens to re-examine an earlier thematic-based analysis of intake workers' reports of interviews with mothers at a children's hospital. In the original study the first author focused on coping styles of parents of children with exceptionalities, whereas in the current study we demonstrate how intake workers' discursive constructions of mothers as pathological functions to dismiss mothers' views and concerns, and cons…
The Economic Burden of Home Care for Children with HIV and Other Chronic Illnesses
Objectives. We compared types, amounts, and costs of home care for children with HIV and chronic illnesses, controlling for the basic care needs of healthy children to determine the economic burden of caring for and home care of chronically ill children. Methods. Caregivers of 97 HIV-positive children, 101 children with a chronic illness, and 102 healthy children were surveyed regarding amounts of paid and unpaid care provided. Caregiving value w…
