Patient Advocacy Group Leaders' Perceptions on Primary Care's Role in Caring for Patients With a History of Breast Cancer
BACKGROUND: Cancer advocacy groups engage patients, families and caregivers in navigating the cancer landscape, with a focus on early detection/screening and providing psychosocial and financial support during and after treatment. These groups are influential among their communities, funders and policymakers. OBJECTIVE: We wished to understand perceptions of breast cancer advocacy group leaders on primary care's role in breast cancer survivorship…
Adoption of Tobacco 21
Despite the recent push for Tobacco 21 legislation in the US and the national adoption of Tobacco 21, there is a paucity of data on the process of policy adoption. To explore the key factors that served as facilitators or challenges to the passage of state T21 laws that apply to the sale of all tobacco products to anyone under 21 years of age, we conducted a comparative, cross-case study in ten states that adopted Tobacco 21 between 2016 and 2019…
A Novel Mixed Methods Approach Combining Geospatial Mapping and Qualitative Inquiry to Identify Multilevel Policy Targets
Multi-level perspectives across communities, medical systems and policy environments are needed, but few methods are available for health services researchers with limited resources. We developed a mixed method health policy approach, the focused Rapid Assessment Process (fRAP) , that is designed to uncover multi-level modifiable barriers and facilitators contributing to public health issues. We illustrate with a study applying fRAP to the issue …
Lessons Learned Designing and Using an Online Discussion Forum for Care Coordinators in Primary Care
While an increasing number of researchers are using online discussion forums for qualitative research, few authors have documented their experiences and lessons learned to demonstrate this method’s viability and validity in health services research. We comprehensively describe our experiences, from start to finish, of designing and using an asynchronous online discussion forum for collecting and analyzing information elicited from care coordinato…
Negotiating an Exit
This study highlights a population that has been largely overlooked in sociological research on labeling and identity: people who formerly identified with emotional disorder labels and have chosen to discard them (delabelers). My qualitative analysis of 40 delabelers'narratives explores processes of identification and disidentification by highlighting the tension between individuals' decision to discard their labeled identities and their simultan…
Expecting and Accepting
This paper has two complementary agendas. One is to develop a formal analysis of temporal ambiguity in self-identification. This refers specifically to having two conflicting orientations toward the future with regard to one's identity (e.g., a temporary expecting orientation and a permanent accepting orientation). I use the recovery identity (e.g., alcoholic, anorexic, agoraphobic) as a temporally ambiguous case because this identity is establis…
