The Financial Costs and Effects on the Well-Being of Nursing Students’ Professional Experience Placements
There is sustained research interest examining what constitutes positive and effective professional experience placements. However, few studies have investigated the financial costs of placements for health profession students. This study bridges the research gap by analysing the financial impacts of placements reported by nursing students in 2018/2019. The study analyses feedback from nursing students at the University of Tasmania, using a compa…
College Students’ Perceptions of Hookup Culture Through a Social Ecological Lens
Based on student journal submissions, we detail how students at a large Mid-Western University in the United States perceive and engage in hookup culture on their campus. Students responded to journal entry prompts and chronicled their own and their friends’ sexual activities and how they perceive the broader campus sexual culture. The initial findings from 110 journal entries illustrate that hooking up has both social and emotional impacts. In t…
Evaluation of a Telehealth Paediatric Asthma and Allergy Clinic Patient Follow-Up During the Covid-19 Pandemic
We demonstrated that the benefits of telehealth include implementing treatment changes and facilitating access to care for children living in rural and remote areas
Teaching and Gender
Described at the institutional, classroom/learning space, and individual levels, gender in education presents itself in relation to teachers and learners, and impacts how the institution of education is understood. This entry discusses gender distribution, pay gaps, pedagogy, curriculum and climates, and gender as influenced by the COVID‐19 pandemic. Education, particularly K–12 education remains a feminized field with little headway in the numbe…
Redesigning Rural Acute Stroke Care
Stroke service delivery in rural areas in Australia lacks evidence-based, best practice care protocols as a result of limited resources and opportunity. Healthcare redesign is an approach to improving health services by understanding barriers and enablers to service provision and work with users to develop solutions for improvement. This research aimed to qualitatively evaluate stroke care in rural Tasmania using a person-centered approach, as pa…
Exploring the Unmet Needs of Young Adults with Stroke in Australia
The post-stroke needs of young adults with stroke are not being met, as most resources are tailored to older people with stroke. This includes technology-based applications, which are being used more frequently in stroke rehabilitation. There is limited data on technology usage to support the unique needs of young adults with stroke in Australia. This study aimed to explore the unmet needs of young adults aged 18-30 years with stroke and ascertai…
The healthcare redesign student experience
A challenge for providers of work-integrated learning courses is delivering a meaningful learning experience for students, while collaborating with organisations to ensure adequate support. Evaluating student experience has traditionally been about collecting feedback on teaching methods, course content and learning outcomes, rather than the educational influence of student interactions with people, places and systems at their workplace. The aim …
Assessment and Management of Obesity and Self-Maintenance (Amos)
Obesity is common in rural areas, and reduced specialist healthcare access impedes its management. A pilot nurse-practitioner-led Assessment and Management of Obesity and Self-Maintenance (AMOS) Clinic focused on individualised obesity care in people living with type 2 diabetes delivered in a rural setting. This study aimed to explore participant and staff experiences of the multidisciplinary obesity clinic to identify barriers and facilitators t…
An Audit of Pre-Pregnancy Maternal Obesity and Diabetes Screening in Rural Regional Tasmania and Its Impact on Pregnancy and Neonatal Outcomes
Maternal obesity in pregnancy, a growing health problem in Australia, adversely affects both mothers and their offspring. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is similarly associated with adverse pregnancy and neonatal complications. A low-risk digital medical record audit of antenatal and postnatal data of 2132 pregnant mothers who gave birth between 2016-2018 residing in rural-regional Tasmania was undertaken. An expert advisory group guided the…
Everyday terrorism
This article investigates the ways sexual violence experienced on college campuses in the United States is situated within the neoliberal university. Feminist theories are utilized to explore the relationship between sexual violence and neoliberal ideologies. The authors evaluate how neoliberal tenets imbedded in higher education have contributed to, and exacerbated, an environment where sexual victimization is common. An institutional level of a…
Staff experiences of a reablement approach to care for older people in a regional Australian community
Reablement is described as a person-centred, goal-directed intervention with a view to regain, maintain or improve the independence of older clients. Although evidence to support the use of reablement as a multidisciplinary, home-based intervention for community-dwelling older adults is increasing, there is limited knowledge about what it means for care staff who provide client-based services. This study, which was nested in a larger program eval…
Purposive sampling
BACKGROUND: Purposive sampling has a long developmental history and there are as many views that it is simple and straightforward as there are about its complexity. The reason for purposive sampling is the better matching of the sample to the aims and objectives of the research, thus improving the rigour of the study and trustworthiness of the data and results. Four aspects to this concept have previously been described: credibility, transferabil…
Organizational Support in Healthcare Redesign Education
Healthcare organizations must continue to improve services to meet the rising demand and patient expectations. For this to occur, the health workforce needs to have knowledge and skills to design, implement, and evaluate service improvement interventions. Studies have shown that effective training in health service improvement and redesign combines didactic education with experiential project-based learning and on-the-ground coaching. Project-bas…
Women’s Pornography Consumption, Alcohol Use, and Sexual Victimization
While research in recent years has investigated the influence of pornography consumption on sexually aggressive behavior, research on the relationship between pornography and experienced victimization is sparse. The current study sought to explore female sexual victimization and its relationship with pornography consumption and alcohol use at two universities ( N = 483). Binary logistic regression analyses indicate that both pornography and alcoh…
Determining readiness for a reablement approach to care in Australia
Reablement is described as a goal directed intervention with a view to maintain or improve the independence of clients through "doing with, rather than doing for". As a relatively new concept in care, lack of specific skills in reablement is not uncommon, however, intrinsic values aligned with reablement are beneficial to organisations providing care and support to clients. The aim of this study is to develop a pre-employment questionnaire to ass…

Constructing the Military Hero
Today we see an increase in the usage of the term hero. Especially in the media, the term is applied not only to those who do specific heroic deeds but to entire professions, e.g., the military. In this paper, we analyze the media’s social construction of military heroes with respect to four individuals, two fictional characters and two real people. We argue that four themes are essential to the construction of the military hero whether for ficti…
Visual art-making as a resource for living positively with arthritis
Sticking Jewels in Your Life
The authors explored women's strategies for achieving quality of life with multiple sclerosis (MS) through interviews with 27 women, most of whom had lived with MS for more than 5 years. Analysis of the semistructured interviews followed the interpretative phenomenological approach. The women portrayed living with MS as an ongoing process of negotiation and described gaining quality of life through looking after health; maintaining meaningful occ…
