Othering and Otherness
This entry offers a general understanding of the meanings of Other in contemporary social and cultural thought. It provides a brief genealogy of Othering in the Western world, looking at the different ways that human beings have been “Othered” and how “Othering” as a process has been transformed over different historical periods—by the Greeks and Romans, by medieval thinkers, by Renaissance and Enlightenment travelers and philosophers—to how it h…
Postcoloniality and the Speaking Body: Revisioning the English Oral Competency Curriculum
In this article the authors focus on the potentiality of postcolonial discourses to revision English oral competency courses that form a part of the general education and communication studies curriculum at numerous universities. The authors use as a case, the basic course in public speaking, which is often a mandatory course toward baccalaureate graduation at many universities. Between Solids/Monologues in Brown: A Mystory Performance
This essay is a performance space in which I access the dramatic monologue form to juxtapose the experiences of a postcolonial body enmeshed in colonial discourses of color with the experiences of a racialized body in America. In scenes and scenarios, I excavate moments from two social archaeologies-an 'old color narrative' arising from the Indian subcontinent, one that is steeped in gender, colonial longings, and filial goodness, and a 'new colo…
Holy Summer: A Field Story
This essay is a storied account of a series of events that occurred in the field in New Delhi, India, in summer 2002. The author's mother, a devout Hindu, found herself besieged under the spell of the 'resident spirit' of their old home, an entity that has yet to be defined or deciphered. The author takes readers into one urban north Indian family's struggle to understand and contain this 'other' force that seemed to hold the author's mother host…
The First Disciple: A Generative Autobiographical Performance From an Ethnographic Field
Keywords aesthetics, generative autobiography, memory, performance ethnography, performative reflexivity
Two Journeys
Two Journeys" is a performance narrative in which I juxtapose memories of early childhood and adolescent experiences in a boarding school in northern India with adult experiences in America and graduate school. In the story, I describe the geographical displacements of a 10-year-old and later an adult to a life without comfort zones-exile at home and abroad. I move back and forth reflectively between the cultures of youth, womanhood, India, and A…
