Latinx/a/o Transfer Student Receptivity at Private Universities
Minimal scholarly attention has focused on the transfer experience of Latinx/a/o students who enroll at private universities. Utilizing multi-methodological qualitative methods (i.e., significant circles and testimonios), this study investigated the transfer receptive culture at private universities during the first year of transfer. Participants described feeling in the margins as both Latinx/a/o and transfer students. They also relied on instit…
Speculative methodological subjects
Times of (post) health crisis, global unrest, and political turmoil, a reliance on conventional methods, which potentially lack radical imagination and future orientation, experimentation, and open-endedness, might not be enough. Furthermore, within the discourses of conventional qualitative inquiry, methodological subjects are often seen as overly pre-determined, singular, and static. In this paper, we approach the conceptual and practical chall…
Reduced n-3 and n-6 Pufa (DHA and AA) Concentrations in Breast Milk and Erythrocytes Phospholipids during Pregnancy and Lactation in Women with Obesity
Obesity during pregnancy is a worrying public health problem worldwide. Maternal diet is critical for fatty acid (FA) placental transport and FA content in breast milk (BM). We evaluated FA composition in erythrocytes phospholipids (EP) and BM in pregnant women with (OBE, n = 30) and without (non-OBE, n = 31) obesity. Sixty-one healthy women were evaluated at their 20-24th gestational week and followed until 6th month of lactation. Diet was evalu…
All dressed up with somewhere to go: Drag expressions on social media and the theatricality of the everyday
This article aims to explore the theatricality of the queered, costumed male body in drag in relation to domestic spaces. To achieve this aim, this exploration is done through the visual analysis of one case study as a methodological tool to examine imagery that presents the male body transformed into a hyperbolic manifestation of itself. The imagery examined in this article exposes the queered space of the costumed male body as a vessel in which…
Introduction: Working the Tensions of the Post-Qualitative Movement in Qualitative Inquiry
In this introduction, the authors briefly survey the field of post-qualitative inquiry, outlining innovations, tensions, and questions that reside within the current field. The authors follow this survey with a review of the special issue, detailing the call and the individual contributions
No! I’m going to school, I need to speak English!’: Who makes family language policies
Schools in the United States have historically conducted language policing in favor of standardized American English. The current study examines links between language policies in eight immigrant families in relation to educational language policies of two public elementary schools operating under an English-only policy in Massachusetts. The study places a focus on the agency of children and parents expressed through interviews, while paying atte…
Working through the experiences of first-generation students of color, university mission, intersectionality, and post-subjectivity
This qualitative study investigates how first-generation undergraduate students of Color at a historically white institution in the U.S. make sense and process the university’s mission, especially in relation to the theoretical frameworks of intersectionality and post-subjectivity. U.S. universities are often structured on market-driven ideologies. They do not necessarily deeply take into account the experiences of their first-generation students…
The body as costume: The theatricality of the male body and the modern peep show
This article explores the body in relation to theatricality, identity and appearance through the examination of an interview and photographs given by one of the founders of the group The House of Disappointments in Helsinki, Finland. Photographs of their gendered, costumed bodies are posted on social media and I propose, create new ways through which the gendered body becomes a symbolic costume when viewed through the lens of peep culture – a voy…
RuPaul's Drag Race: A study in the commodification of white ruling-class femininity and the etiolation of drag
This article explores the spectacularized commodification of the queer body that takes place in RuPaul's Drag Race . In appropriating the political history of drag culture as both social commentary and activism, RuPaul's Drag Race silences the resistance to hegemonic gender binaries that is characteristic of the origins of radical drag. Drag Race commodifies the body through performances of drag that simultaneously attempt to subvert as they reif…
