  • Parenting practices and trajectories of proactive coping assets among emerging adult Black men

    Open Access•Christopher C Collins, Elizabeth Kwon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2024•References: 95

Positive youth development (PYD) frameworks suggest that a critical response to investigating the challenges young Black men living in resource poor communities experience involves identifying contextual resources in young men's lives and personal assets that promote success. The following study examines heterogeneity in proactive coping assets trajectories, parental practices as predictors of developmental trajectories, and associated outcomes o…

  • Life stress and unmarried, Black fathers’ attitudes toward attachment

    Open Access•Clare R Thomas, Christopher C Collins et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Men & Masculinity•2023•References: 2

Unmarried, Black fathers' positive engagement contributes to children's health and development beginning in early infancy. For many men, preparations for parenthood begin before birth as expectant fathers formulate parenting attitudes that can promote secure infant-father attachment relationships. This study examined aspects of life stress as predictors of prenatal attitudes toward attachment -- the extent to which expectant fathers endorsed prom…

  • Dream Time With Dad

    Open Access•Christopher C Collins•ARTICLE•Culture Studies ↔ Critical…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 18

The following autoethnography is a death ritual for my father. The ritual enacts my father's process of artmaking and his request to preserve his story through an act of poiesis. The text constellates themes of generational psychic inheritance, polytheism, and an orientation toward death. These subjects are framed by the larger context of a global pandemic and a health care system under duress. Autoethnography as ritual provides a method for tran…

  • The Sympoiesis of Clouds

    Christopher C Collins•ARTICLE•Departures in Critical…•2020

In this essay, I use performative writing as a framework to explore the problem of climate change. Specifically, the shifting and accumulative nature of clouds serves as a trope for imaginatively restaging environmental issues. In the essay, I view the environment as a symbolic and material construction that is coproduced in connection to the personal, discursive, and collective unconscious. Through narrative, poetry, and performance, I argue for…

  • Animal parade

    Christopher C Collins•ARTICLE•Text and Performance Quarterly•2019•Cited by: 2

Animal Parade engages ethical questions about how we constitute relationships among human animals, nonhuman animals, and the environment. The script uses posthumanist theory, through aesthetic performance, to address how discursive structures produce, limit, or reinforce humanist assumptions that lead to environmental exploitation. In light of such concerns, the show challenges audiences to examine performative and nonlinguistic rituals of kin-ma…

  • On posthuman materiality

    Christopher C Collins•ARTICLE•Text and Performance Quarterly•2019•Cited by: 4

On posthuman materiality: art-making as rhizomatic rehearsal engages art-making as a methodology for rehearsing the aesthetics and thematic arguments of the show Animal Parade. The following essay uses the concept of the rhizome, as defined by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, to provide a rehearsal process initiated through the interconnection of objects in art-making. The essay illustrates the value of vital materialism on the creative process…

  • Fractured

    Alison Fisher Bodkin, Christopher C Collins•ARTICLE•Text and Performance Quarterly•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Fractured is a two-person performance that engages the topic of hydraulic fracturing as a subject of analysis and an analytic framework. The script investigates the ways in which contemporary performances of environmentalism and capitalism are inextricably bound to each other within the discourse of “fracking,” and as such each section of the script identifies a struggle to define and represent “fracking” for the general public. The goal of this …

  • Dancing Into the Desert

    Open Access•Christopher C Collins•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This article addresses concerns of being and becoming between father and son. The article uses performative and autoethnographic approaches to examine the poetics of memory and family construction. The piece centers on disability, fatherhood, and masculinity. The author produces a narrative engagement with his father that imagines a reflexive approach to the poetics of memory. The text spreads across various memories culminating in a recent journ…
