Embodied Transformation: Psychedelic Therapy Through the Lens of Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology
This paper develops a phenomenological account of the therapeutic significance of psychedelic-induced mystical experience, drawing on the philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The central argument holds that the enduring therapeutic benefits of psychedelics emerge through a radical transformation in the structure of lived experience. Two prominent objections to the therapeutic value of mystical experience are examined and shown to rest on implicit…
Conflict and Change: Integrating Social and Developmental Psychology
Social and developmental psychology are often viewed as distinct subdisciplines, each with its own theories and methodologies. Memory in the Wild
Venturing out of the laboratory into the wild of natural settings, it becomes untenable to locate memory strictly in the head. Instead, memory appears as a materially extended and socially distributed process, embedded within culture and history. This book explores the complex relations between practices of remembering and the settings in which they are enacted. It advances a novel set of concepts developed from ecological, cognitive, cultural an…

Remembering as a Cultural Process
National Memory and Where to Find It
National memory is a special form of memory in general and of collective memory in particular. Even in an age of globalization, modern states devote massive resources to promulgating official accounts of their past that support national identities, including illusions of destiny, which can be a starting point for conflict. This chapter asks, “What is national memory?” and “Where can we find it?” It may seem natural to pose these questions in this…
Culture and Social Change: Transforming Society Through the Power of Ideas
This book brings together social sciencists to create an interdisciplinary dialogue on the topic of social change as a cultural process. Culture is as much about novelty as it is about tradition, as much about change as it is about stability. This dynamic tension is analyzed in collective protests, intergroup dynamics, language, mass media, science, community participation, art, and social transitions to capitalism, among others contexts. These d…
