Social Issues and Socioeconomic Status
This paper examines the hypothesized inverse relationship between socioeconomic status and conservatism on a wide range of so-called social issues. This relationship is important in itself as well as in some theories that link political dealignment to features of postindustrial society. We examine this relationship by looking at the net effects of education, occupation, income, and class (owner, supervisor, or worker) on nine issues. Our results …

The Social Basis of Antifeminism
Among the various attempts to identify the social roots of antifeminism, two theories in particular are prominent. The first argues that for both men and women, anti-abortion and anti-ERA sentiments have disproportionate appeal among lower socioeconomic status, rural, and older constituencies. The second asserts that for women these sentiments are most common among those most vulnerable to and dependent upon men. Examination of studies of anti-ab…

Social Conservatism, New Republicans, and the 1980 Election
Using data from the 1980 National Election Study, we examine the claims (1) that those voters who shifted to Ronald Reagan in 1980 (“New Republicans”) were drawn disproportionately from the lower to middle strata of the population: (2) that they were social conservatives motivated by issues like abortion and ERA: and (3) that they were more religious and alienated from the federal government than average. Our results strongly suggest that all of …

American Conservatism and Government Funding of the Social Sciences and the Arts
The efforts of the Reagan Administration to cut government funding for the arts and the social sciences reflects not only a general desire to curtail government spending but also a specific conservative effort to 'defund the Left' by eliminating especially those programs regarded by conservatives as the basic source of liberal and radical social change in the United States. This paper examines the conservative animus against government support fo…
