Gun-related incidents in schools have captivated public attention and heavily influenced the organizational policies of K–12 education in the United States in recent decades. Using restricted administrative records of approximately 3 million students who ever attended public schools in the state of Indiana between 2006 and 2025, the authors analyze the prevalence and context of gun and deadly weapon events in schools. • The Echo of Neighborhood Disadvantage

    Open Access•Steven Elias Alvarado, Alexandra Cooperstock•ARTICLE•City and Community•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 31

Drawing on 35 years of restricted geocoded National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) data, we estimate the association between multigenerational exposure to neighborhood disadvantage in childhood and income in adulthood. Invoking cousin fixed effects models that adjust for unobserved legacies of disadvantage that cascade across generations, we find that families where both mothers and their children are exposed to childhood neighborhood disadv…

    Open Access•Steven Elias Alvarado•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•2021•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 151

This study examines the association between college-bound friends and college enrollment using restricted transcript data from the High School Longitudinal Study. Propensity score matching and school fixed effects models suggest that having close college-bound friends is positively associated with enrolling in college. However, Black and Latino male students are much less likely to benefit from having college-bound friends than others, suggesting…

  • The Complexities of Race and Place

    Open Access•Steven Elias Alvarado•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2020•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 98

The author uses restricted geocoded tract-level panel data (1986-2014) that span the prison boom and the acceleration of residential segregation in the United States from two cohorts of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (1979 and Children and Young Adults) to study whether the association between childhood neighborhood disadvantage and adult incarceration varies by race and ethnicity. Sibling fixed-effects models suggest that exposure to …

  • Delayed Disadvantage

    Steven Elias Alvarado•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2016

Neighborhood effects scholarship suggests that neighborhoods may impart different effects across the early life-course because children's interactions with neighborhood actors and institutions evolve across the stages of child development. This paper expands our understanding of neighborhood effects on cognitive and non-cognitive development across childhood and early adolescence by capitalizing on thirteen waves of restricted and never-before-us…

  • Search of Peace

    Open Access•Steven Elias Alvarado, D S Massey•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•2010•Citada por: 24•Referencias: 31

The authors analyze the effects of structural adjustment and violence on international migration from selected countries in Latin America by estimating a series of event history models that predicted the likelihood of initial migration to the United States as a function of the murder rate, economic openness, and selected controls in the country of origin. Although several theories posit a connection between structural economic change and violence…
