Tracking Australian students’ participation in senior secondary geography
This study examines trends in senior secondary geography participation in Australia from 1998 to 2023, using data from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth and published senior secondary data. The research reveals a significant decline in geography enrolment nationally, with the proportion of Year 12 students studying geography falling from 8.1% (1998–2017) to 6.2% (2012–2023). Substantial variations exist across jurisdictions, with Weste…
Principles of Successful Digital Inclusion Initiatives in Remote Australia
Digital inclusion remains elusive for many people living in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of Australia. People in many communities experience limited access, high cost, and often struggle with digital literacies. The policy environment increasingly assumes that government and financial services are universally accessible. The Australian Government has initiated several digital inclusion strategies. However, remote commu…

The Making and Breaking of Kinetic Empire
This paper applies the concept of ‘kinetic empire’ to the eastern Mediterranean world in the tenth and eleventh centuries. The term ‘kinetic empire’ is borrowed from Hämäläinen's analysis of the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century north American Comanche Empire. It refers to the way in which trans- and supra-regional power could be created, expressed and enforced through mobile means. The article focuses primarily on the role of mobility in the ex…
Political Culture in the Latin West, Byzantium and the Islamic World, c.700–c.1500
This comparative study explores three key cultural and political spheres – the Latin west, Byzantium and the Islamic world from Central Asia to the Atlantic – roughly from the emergence of Islam to the fall of Constantinople. These spheres drew on a shared pool of late antique Mediterranean culture, philosophy and science, and they had monotheism and historical antecedents in common. Yet where exactly political and spiritual power lay, and how it…

Introduction
In modern popular culture the term 'global' is synonymous with global connectedness, even 'globalization'. The Netflix series Sense8 offers an example of this understanding. The story is a fantasy of total global connectivity in the present day, and follows eight people who are scattered around the world, but linked telepathically. The first series was filmed entirely on location in Berlin, Chicago, London, Mexico City, Mumbai, Nairobi, Reykjavik…

Being Moved (On)
It is in the contemporary period of Indigenous cultural recognition that the biopolitical system of policing Aboriginal walkers in Australia's frontier towns has become so normalized that it takes place without public notice, using universally accepted mechanisms for shedding metropolitan areas of the unsightly and unwanted. Ironically, the hypermarginalized hunter-gatherer population can be identified by their perambulation - they walk - a form …

New Approaches to Byzantine History
In recent years, a wealth of new scholarship has appeared, which is dedicated to the history and culture of the Byzantine Empire. The chronological, geographical and thematic range of this scholarship varies considerably, but much of the literature is very accessible to the non‐expert audience. This article presents a synopsis of the most approachable research and identifies some of the most exciting areas of study. While Constantinople has often…
Literacy, Education and Manuscript Transmission in Byzantium and Beyond
The papers in this volumes consider literacy, education and manuscript transmission in Byzantium and its neighbouring worlds, areas which to date have received surprisingly little sustained scholarly treatment among Byzantinists. Contributions include an overview, survey papers and individual case studies, many of which draw on recently discovered or rarely consulted sources: literary sources include astrological texts, saints' lives and florileg…
