  • Antonio de Benavides (1678-1762)

    Francisco A Eissa-Barroso, Francisco A Eissa‐Barroso•ARTICLE•TSN Transatlantic Studies Network•2021

  • “The Honor of the Spanish Nation”

    Francisco A Eissa-Barroso, Francisco A Eissa‐Barroso•CHAPTER•Early Bourbon Spanish America•2013

This chapter shows that the initial militarization of Spanish American viceregal appointments, alluded to earlier, remained a characteristic of nominations to these and other governmental offices in the late 1730s and 1740s. Combination of the crown's preference for appointing military officers to governmental posts in the Indies and the Mediterranean location of the main theatres of war during the period might have had important repercussions fo…

  • Early Bourbon Spanish America

    Francisco A Eissa-Barroso, Francisco A Eissa‐Barroso et al.•BOOK•Early Bourbon Spanish America•2013

The years between the accession of the house of Bourbon to the Spanish throne in 1700 and the coronation of Carlos III in 1759 have often been bundled up, and dismissed, together with the later years of Habsburg rule. Growing out of the first Anglophone academic workshop to focus exclusively on Early Bourbon Spanish America, this collective volume gives prominence to the first half of the eighteenth century as a distinct historical period. Discus…

On February 18, 1724, field marshal Antonio Manso Maldonado arrived in New Granada as the president, governor, and captain-general of the New Kingdom. He had been appointed to this position on December 4, 1723, because both the crown and the Chamber of the Indies thought it would be best executed by a military officer. Manso Maldonado could boast more than 30 years of military service, proven loyalty, and administrative experience, much of it dur…

  • The Illusion of Disloyalty

    Francisco A Eissa-Barroso, Francisco A Eissa‐Barroso•ARTICLE•Hispanic Research Journal•2010

Following his overthrow on 15 September 1808 José de Iturrigaray, Viceroy of New Spain, was sent to the Peninsula on charges of disloyalty to the king. When his indictment was reviewed by the Council of the Indies, it was found to have been constructed by the authorities in New Spain in a faulty manner. This article analyses the process through which the indictment was constructed, asking what determined the way in which the charges of treason we…
