Issues of War and Peace: Is Religion More of the Problem and What Are Mahatma Gandhi's Insights
When examining the history of religions and dominant religious narratives, institutions, cultures, ideologies, and practices in the contemporary world, one is tempted to conclude that religion is more of the problem in relating to diverse issues of war and peace. Dominant religions and religious cultures seem overwhelmingly to be causes, express systemic structures, and provide ideological, theological, and philosophical justifications for violen…

Low-impact land use pathways to deep decarbonization of electricity
A growing number of jurisdictions are passing ambitious clean energy policies. Yet few studies have accounted for natural and agricultural land impacts of low-carbon pathways and how environmental siting constraints affect electricity costs and technology choices. To address this gap, we developed an integrated land-energy planning framework to examine the land use trade-offs of renewable energy development required to achieve ambitious clean ene…

Placing race: On the resonance of place with black geographies
A range of conceptual terms and diverse theoretical traditions have been used to study geographies of race. Black geographical scholarship has persuasively articulated the need to better understand black agency and experiences. We suggest that the conceptual lens of place, and specifically relational place-making, is particularly congruent with the black geographical interest in agency, experience, and non-material spatial practices. It is also a…
The Media Diet Imbalance Score: A Measure of Aggregate Media Diet
As media options continue to expand in both quantity and variety and move to new media platforms, consumers’ media diets are becoming increasingly varied and complex. This complexity calls for a more nuanced method of quantifying media consumption that goes beyond the binary like-minded or cross-cutting categories currently used in studies of selective exposure. We develop a measure that captures the full diversity of content in an individual’s m…
Prologue: Encounters with Mircea Eliade and his legacy for the 21st century
To mark the centennial of Mircea Eliade, the articles in this special issue of Religion analyze various aspects of his life and his scholarship, and suggest what may be of value in Eliade's legacy for the study of religion in the 21st century. In my study, using one of Eliade's favorite terms, ‘the encounter,’ I suggest what my encounters with Eliade reveal about Eliade, his scholarship, and especially his legacy. By delineating and analyzing enc…
Religion and Reductionism: Essays on Eliade, Segal, and the Challenge of the Social Sciences for the Study of Religion, edited by Thomas A. Idinopulos and Edward A. Yonan
Methodological concerns over reductionism in the study of religion have de fined much of the recent scholarship in religious studies, especially the writings of social scientists. With a few notable exceptions, such as Daniel Pals, con troversies over reductionism have usually consisted of social scientific reduc tionists debating the issues, with the nonreductionist or antireductionist schol ars of religion simply ignoring the criticisms posed by…

Recent defenders of Eliade: A critical evaluation
Several defenders of Mircea Eliade have written books maintaining that Eliade's personal life and literary and scholarly contributions are all of one piece; that one cannot understand his scholarship without understanding his personal life, fears, ambitions, religious and other commitments. Reviewed and critically evaluated are Mac Linscott Ricketts's interpretation that the essence of Eliade's scholarship can be seen in his early Romanian experi…
Gandhi’s Philosophy: The Struggle Over Many Contradictory Philosophies
Buddhism Transformed: Religious Change in Sri Lanka
Antiwar Asian scholars and the Vietnam/Indochina war
During the past fifteen years, various Asian scholars who had been active in the Committee of Concerned Asian Scholars (CCAS) and have associated themselves with the Bulletin of Concerned Asian Scholars (BCAS) have shared with me some of the thoughts, feelings, commitments, and expectations they had in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and have discussed how subsequent developments (in Indochina and other parts of Asia, in U.S. policy, and in Asian…

Dharma and Development: Religion as Resource in the Sarvodaya Self-Help Movement
The predecessor to Buddhism at Work, this book concretely describes how a village movement in Sri Lanka draws on indigenous cultural and religious values to redefine the nature and purpose of development. It mobilizes and encourages popular participation, and mounts distinctive organizing strategies. It illustrates the relevance of religious traditions for any alternative development efforts in the developing and industrialized worlds

Ministers and their Mandarins
TYPICAL STATEMENTS ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CIVIL servants and ministers include the following which I have come across myselc ‘it is the Civil Service mandarins who really run the country’, ‘a strong minister must frequently reject his department's advice to prove he is master’; ‘all decisions by government are based not on the merits of the case but whether they are likely to attract votes at the next election’. The first of these implies…
Universities and the Vietnam war: A case study of a successful struggle
Ever since its beginnings, there have been divisions of thought among the most active members of the Committee of Concerned Asian Scholars as to what direction the organization should take. Probably the major division has been between those who see CCAS as a source of alternative radical scholarship and those who see it as a “movement” or action-oriented organization deeply involved in contemporary anti-imperialist struggles. The issue of the Cen…
Mircea Eliade's Phenomenological Analysis of Religious Experience
Is academic freedom still a viable principle
Last fall, when suspicions regarding the academic integrity of the Vietnam Center were first voiced on this campus, spokesmen for the Center lost no time in denouncing the critics as “irresponsible”, “unscholarly”, or worse. Since that time the irresponsible ones have been joined by many Asian scholars in this country and abroad who likewise feel that the Center lacks sufficient guarantees of academic freedom and independence from such a politica…
