  • Matthew Black 3.9.1908–2.10.1994

    Open Access•R Mcl Wilson•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1995

Professor Matthew Black, the first editor of New Testament Studies , died on October 2, 1994 at the age of 86. He had been in failing health for several months. A former Principal of St Mary's College in the University of St Andrews, he was widely recognised as one of the most distinguished New Testament scholars of his generation

  • Nag Hammadi and the New Testament

    Open Access•R Mcl Wilson•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1982

Among the materials utilised to reinforce the cover of Codex VII from Nag Hammadi there are three inscribed papyrus fragments containing definite dates: a receipt dated 341 A.D., another of 346, and a deed of surety dated to 348. This provides a clear and unambiguous terminus a quo for the manufacture of this codex, although the fixing of a more precise date remains problematical. We do not know how long a receipt would be retained before it was …

  • The Gospel of Philip

    Open Access•R Mcl Wilson•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•1964

The document with which this paper is concerned was discovered in 1945 or 1946 in the Gnostic library of Nag Hammadi, in the same codex as the more famous Gospel of Thomas. Unlike Thomas, however, it has so far attracted comparatively little attention—largely because it affords no scope for the seekers after sensation. It has been held by reputable scholars that Thomas goes back at least in part to a tradition independent of our canonical Gospels…

  • A Note on the Gospel of Truth (33. 8–9)

    Open Access•R Mcl Wilson•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1963

The GospeJ of Truth is by no means a simple text, either to translate or to understand. Some passages indeed have so far resisted the united efforts of those who have set their hands to the task of translation and interpretation, and this is particularly true of the four Cairo pages, recently published by Messrs Rascher of Zürich in a format to match the original Luxusausgabe of 1956 1

  • The New Testament in The Nag Hammadi Gospel of Philip

    Open Access•R Mcl Wilson•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1963

The purpose of this paper is to examine, so far as may be done in brief compass, the New Testament echoes and allusions in the Gnostic Gospel of Philip discovered at Nag Hammadi. 1 These echoes and allusions are fairly numerous, although not always easy to detect. In some cases, indeed, what appears to one scholar a clear and unmistakable echo may to another seem quite insignificant. To take but two examples, when we read ‘Then the slaves will be…

  • “Thomas” and the Growth of the Gospels

    Open Access•R Mcl Wilson•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1960

The title of this paper quite evidently promises more than can be fulfilled in the space of a single lecture. On any reckoning, the Gospel of Thomas contains over 100 logia , and even if some may for present purposes be set aside the discussion and evaluation of the rest would still be enough to fill a quite substantial book. All that is offered here is a preliminary survey, an attempt to indicate some of the possible lines of approach, some of t…

  • Some Recent Studies in Gnosticism

    Open Access•R Mcl Wilson•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1959

The study of Gnosticism is about to enter upon a new phase. Of this we are confidently assured by those who have had opportunity to examine the documents discovered some thirteen years ago at Nag Hammadi, and to say the least the publication not of one or two only but of no less than forty-three hitherto unknown texts cannot but bring a considerable accession to our knowledge. 1 As yet only one has been made available in an edited form, 2 althoug…

    R Mcl Wilson•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Religions- und…•1957

The new material, however, not only affords solutions for old problems but also raises new questions, among them inevitably that of a possible connexion between the type of Judaism represented by these scrolls and the Gnostic movement of the second Century. As Professor Q u i s ρ e 1 has put it2', We must inquire: Does there exist any connexion between Jewish heterodoxy as it finds expression, e. g. in the 'Essene' documents from the Dead Sea, he…

  • Gnostic Origins Again

    R Mcl Wilson•ARTICLE•Vigiliae Christianae•1957

In a previous article (V.C. IX. 193ff.), an attempt was made to grapple with vexed question of origins of Gnosticism, to distinguish what can be taken as certain from what is still conjectural, and in particular to urge necessity of a greater clarity and precision in our use of terms.l In a sense, problem is one of definition, but as Haenchen has observed it is not merely an academic question; it affects our whole interpretation of origins and de…
