The Oldest Past of Christianity
The article argues that just as religion is manufactured or invented, so is tradition and history. This starting point is worked out with reference to history as a discursive construction, the past as fictioned in the present. The past does not exist independently of historical practice. History is a tool for ideological persuasion and ideological criticism in the chaotic, disputed and contested present. This understanding of historiography is br…
Burton Mack’s Challenge to the Study of Religion
Burton Mack was the most influential and, perhaps, controversial scholar of the Christian bible and Christian origins of his generation. He exposed the conventional story of Christian origins as a myth that needed to be studied not on its own terms but in terms of a general theory of religion that would be useful also in the study of religions other than Christianity. This article provides a brief summary of the main features of Mack’s work for r…
CSBS
In 1933 nine scholars from the University of Toronto and its affiliated colleges met to establish the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies (CSBS), which thus became the oldest academic society in Canada. This article examines the CSBS's early history with a special focus on its purpose and intellectual stance. From there it moves to chart an impression of the Society's current achievements, activities and intellectual character. This leads to a b…
Colloquium on Method and Theory
Wither or whither
In this paper the authors trace very briefly the most consequential points of the history of Religious Studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This history demonstrates that the structural location and the disciplinary horizon of Religious Studies are central factors in whether Religious Studies is a marginal, threatened endeavor or whether it has a central, thriving place within the family of social sciences in a large…
Disciplinary Anxieties in the Study of Religion
After remarking on some common worries that trouble the academic study of religion, the article presents an argument for an anthropocentric stance and analytic preference as the directional compass, or an intellectual alignment, in the disciplinary practices of Religious Studies. At the core of this stance is a ‘reductionist’ commitment to a corrigible theoretical monism, which is, however, compatible with plural analytics or methodologies. Keywo…
Body, Character and the Problem of Femaleness in Early Christian Discourse
Exaggerating in the direction of truth so as to provoke historiographical thought, this article claims that formative Christianity was wholly an androcentric project. Oft-cited women-friendly texts (Luke, Galatians, Gospel of Thomas) are not exceptions to early Christian masculinised gender ideology. The article locates early Christian commitment to a piety of 'andreia' (manliness) within the similar hegemonic Graeco-Roman gender ideology. It con…
The Past as Simulacrum in the Canonical Narratives of Christian Origins
This article meditates on the ambiguity of the concept of 'history' in Christian thought and in the historiography of Christian origins. After exploring the ambiguity of 'history', using Jesus as the illustrative case in point, it is argued that 'history' is itself the result of a complex process of historical production, a production of the kind that renders history, especially histories of highly valued origins, into narrative representations o…

When the first seventy chapters of Musil's Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften came out in translation, considerable criticism was leveled against the translators for having mutilated the novel. On the basis of the English translation alone, it is indeed hard to see what the work stands for or why it stands for anything,' remaiked one of the reviewers. To the friends of Musil, who had eagerly awaited the English edition of his monumental novel, such crit…
