Material Affordance and the Mediated Turn in Korean Buddhist Material Culture
Contemporary Korean Buddhism circulates through an expanding network of material and mediated forms that operate without explicitly demanding doctrinal commitment or institutional affiliation. Against the prevailing frameworks of secularization and commodification, this article proposes material affordance as an alternative analytical vocabulary, asking not what Buddhist objects and spaces signify but what they do to those who encounter them. Thr…
A Medium for Chanting the Buddha’s Name for Rebirth in the Pure Land
This study examines the Kwŏnsu-chŏngŏp-wangsaeng-ch’ŏpkyŏngdo (勸修淨業往生捷徑圖), a woodblock print created for Pure Land practice during the Chosŏn period. The print served as material evidence demonstrating how Pure Land faith developed within Chosŏn Buddhism, which consolidated various schools under the Sŏn tradition while integrating doctrinal studies and Pure Land faith. Through iconographic analysis of the transformation tableau and examination of…
Effects of socioeconomic status on physical activity and cardiovascular diseases prior to and during the Covid-19 pandemic in the older adults
Purpose This research seeks to evaluate the repercussions of socioeconomic status (SES) on physical activity (PA) among the older population, both pre and intra-COVID-19 pandemic. It is well established that PA has a significant association with CVDs and the pandemic has restricted PA in the older population. We endeavor to discern…
A Single Bout of Remote Ischemic Preconditioning Suppresses Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in Asian Obese Young Men
Remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) has been shown to minimize subsequent ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), whereas obesity has been suggested to attenuate the efficacy of RIPC in animal models. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a single bout of RIPC on the vascular and autonomic response after IRI in young obese men. A total of 16 healthy young men (8 obese and 8 normal weight) underwent two experimental tr…
New Iconography in Court-Sponsored Buddhist Prints of the Early Joseon Dynasty-Focusing on Record of the Manifestation of Avalokitesvara
Many recent studies show that during the early Joseon dynasty, even kings who externally appeared strongly anti-Buddhist defended or condoned royal relatives who sponsored Buddhist works. Extant sutras produced under court sponsorship attest to this fact. An analysis of the production of court Buddhist prints, focusing on the King Sejo era when a particularly large number of Buddhist projects were completed, yields diverse information such as cha…
Utilization of the Iconography of Buddhist Prints during the Joseon Dynasty-Focusing on "the Listener" in Sakyamuni Preaching Paintings
This paper focuses on the iconography of "the Listener" in Buddhist prints that was adopted in Joseon dynasty Sakyamuni Preaching paintings. Regarding change in the Listener iconography from bodhisattva form to monk form, diverse research has been conducted on the Listener's identity and origin. However, existing studies are limited as they fail to consider the circumstances of the time this iconography was first adopted and trends in Joseon Budd…
Korean Single-Sheet Buddhist Woodblock Illustrated Prints Produced for Protection and Worship
This paper examines the characteristics and production background of major examples of single-sheet Buddhist woodblock illustrated prints. In the form a single sheet of paper, the original first prints were not easily handed down, and in most cases the date and place of production are not clearly known. These factors made systematic research difficult, but the release of various related materials has recently enabled comprehensive study of the su…
