Anthropological Applications of Current Bone Histomorphometric and Imaging Techniques
The persistence of bone tissue after death provides skeletal biologists with a record of individuals’ lives, highlighting biological processes and offering insights into life history events including aging, pathology, and drug regimens. The analysis of skeletal material can be approached at several hierarchical levels ranging from the macroscopic gross analysis of intact bones, to the molecular (e.g., cell signaling pathways) and nanoscale (e.g.,…
A Collaborative, Multi‐Institutional Growth Standard for Dam‐Reared Infant Rhesus and Pigtail Macaques ( Macaca mulatta and Macaca nemestrina ) in Research Settings
A multicenter study was undertaken to generate new weight‐for‐age growth standards to monitor the growth of infant rhesus and pigtail macaques in research breeding colonies. Previously, single institutions have developed reference growth curves, under the assumption of linear growth, for infants raised in certain settings with a limited scope of benefit to outside institutions. Weight and health records from seven research institutions across the…
The impact of housing on birth outcomes in breeding macaque groups across multiple research centers
Demand for nonhuman primates in research has increased over the past several years, while nonhuman primate supply remains a challenge in the United States. Global nonhuman primate supply issues make it increasingly important to maximize domestic colony production. To explore how housing conditions across primate breeding colonies impact infant survival and animal production more broadly, we collected medical records from 7959 rhesus macaques ( Ma…
Communitas, Worship, and Music
Music often facilitates the experience of communitas within disparate groups of people. As the American mainline Protestant church faces schism and struggles for relevance in a post-modern era defined by mistrust in the institutional church and social subjectivism, reexamining how singing together can break down barriers within ecclesial structures and create shared understanding is merited. As demonstrated through the music of pilgrimage, commun…
Richardson v Oracle more than half a decade on
In 2014, the decision in Richardson v Oracle significantly increased compensation awards for victims of discrimination and sexual harassment. Commentators referred to the decision as ‘ground-breaking’ and hypothesised that the floodgates would open for sexual harassment and discrimination cases. This article reviews these claims seven years on and asks: did the floodgates open? Case law review and analysis concludes that, while the ground did not…
Access and empowerment in digital language learning, maintenance, and revival
Technology has paved the way for new modalities in language learning; however, indigenous populations often lack access to these tools. This critical literature review examines how researchers have tried to overcome this hurdle by reaching out to marginalized indigenous populations and providing access to emerging technologies. We used 63 texts from 1990 to 2019 to explore how technologies have been used to empower marginalized indigenous languag…
The place of tattoos, beards and hairstyles in discrimination law
Traditional rationales for discrimination law often focus on the immutability of characteristics. Pursuant to these rationales, discrimination should be prohibited where it relates to a characteristic that a person cannot change, or where the characteristic is so connected to a person’s identity that they should not be forced to change. Thus, discrimination is wrongful where the characteristic is an ‘accident of birth’. But the reach of discrimin…
