Postscript: Nella Larsen’s Faces
Reflecting on the work of the special issue “The Modernist Face in/as World Literature,” this essay contemplates the deflationary logic of reading the modernist face – and the modernist literary text – as acts of interpretation defeated by the very qualities of dynamism that induce them. It does so via an original account of the face in Nella Larsen’s 1928 novel Quicksand and the widely circulated photographic portraits of Larsen made by James La…
Images Dreamed from the Inside
This article reflects on the process of researching and writing a critical-creative account of women and girls in photography history. It contemplates the challenges of drawing close to one’s objects of study—both the textual materials of feminist media studies and the subjects they represent—and calls for feminist scholars to undertake this work all the same. The Watch-Bitch Now: Reassessing the Natural Woman in Han Kang's The Vegetarian and Charlotte Wood's The Natural Way of Things
This essay provides the first sustained scholarly analysis of two new novels by women: Han Kang’s The Vegetarian and Charlotte Wood’s The Natural Way of Things. It argues that these texts, when read together, provide a crucial site for reevaluating the legacies of radical French feminist theory and ecofeminism in the late twentieth century, while also testing some of the limits of recent work in critical animal studies. In both novels, female cha…
