Does God Intervene in Our Lives? Special Divine Action in Aquinas
Does God intervene in our lives? In this paper, I respond "yes" and work out a Thomistic account of special divine action in human life. I argue that God intensifies His action in moments that are particularly significant for our salvation. In such moments, God intervenes in a contingent mode and reorients our lives for the sake of our final good. First, I present Aquinas' terminological choice of specialis and intervenire and address concerns ex…

The Experience of Prophecy and the Metaphysics of Providence in Aquinas
This paper discusses the active role of the prophet within divine providence, namely her understanding of the prophetic message and her use of prophecy. I focus on Aquinas' account of prophecy and I adopt two methods: the phenomenological method that describes the experience of prophecy and the metaphysical method that starts from the divine attribute of goodness and works through the order of divine providence. In Aquinas' view, prophecy is a pe…
How to Reasonably Wait for the End of the World
For Christians, coping with a crisis requires a proper expectation of the end of the world. This article will discuss the experience of Thessalonians’ persecuted community, who receive solace and orientation from Saint Paul’s eschatological teaching. I will focus on Aquinas’ and Heidegger’s reading of Saint Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians. Their interpretation reveals two opposite ways of waiting for the end of the world, which pertain to two…
Gadamer and Cusanus on Creation
The creation of the world may not seem, at first glance, to be a Gadamerian topic. Gadamer's discretion on religious matters as well as his critique of metaphysics might make us think that the philosopher from Heidelberg was more interested in a historical theory of comprehension and a secular ontology of language rather than in such ample religious and metaphysical scenarios as the creation of the world. The understanding of creation is nonethel…
