Understanding young adult Muslim and Christian attitudes toward queer identity
This article utilises data from two parallel mixed-methods projects to examine attitudes to queer identity among heterosexual Muslim and Christian young adults aged between 18 and 25 in Canada and the UK. Drawing on questionnaires, interviews and video diaries, our analysis revealed the enormous complexity regarding how participants made sense of their, largely contextually mediated, attitudes. A qualitative approach enabled us to carefully consi…
Sites of Resistance
Trinity Western University’s Community Covenant has been the subject of public and legal attention with specific reference to a proposed law school. At the heart of much of the contention about the law school, opponents have expressed concern about the provisions in the Covenant that restrict the rights of LGBTQI+ students—their identities and relationships. While much of the focus has been on the potential harm for LGBTQI+ students, and the expe…
Identities Under Construction
Complex, Critical and Caring
Recent scholarly and media perspectives on religion and youth have often depicted young people as being apathetic when it comes to religion. The methods used in research on religion are also typically informed by outdated, fixed idea of religious identity that are no longer applicable, especially to young people. This paper confronts these issues by applying contemporary theories of religious diversity, including lived religion and religious comp…

Religious Freedom and Sexual Orientation
The relationship between freedom of religion and sexual orientation equality rights in Canada (and elsewhere) is frequently seen as one of inherent tension and conflict. In the three decades since the entrenchment of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the nature of this relationship has become more publicly visible and more publicly debated, as jurisprudence regarding equality rights and freedom of religion has sought to define itself a…
Globalized Religion and Sexual Identity
Religious and sexual orientation intersections in education and media
This article will examine and challenge the ways in which religious and sexually diverse identities are constructed as oppositional and further regulated as such within policy and legislation. Although focused on Canada, this discussion has international resonance where religion and sexual orientation debates and education policies are also a central focus of controversy. Within these rigid identity assumptions, reinforced through public and lega…
Globalization, Religion and Sexuality
Although difficult to capture all changes and current experiences regarding religion and sexuality across the globe, this article provides a survey of the ways these two categories intersect across multiple nations at a specific moment in time. In this article, I consider the assumptions that are embedded in public notions about religion and sexuality in relationship to one another in global context (and public policies across nations). I reflect…
Fairies, Mermaids, Mothers, and Princesses
Luce Irigaray postulates a homosocial cultural order in her article “When the Goods Get Together” (1981), a cultural order of men that is threatened by the possibility of female unity or females “getting together” and disrupting the play among men. This article applies Irigaray's analysis of the homosocial order to the story of Peter Pan to expose and illuminate the ways a childhood story demonstrates the very cultural order Irigaray argues is at…
