Neighbourhood effects on psychotic and depressive symptoms in the context of religious sectarianism in Northern Ireland: A data linkage study
BACKGROUND: The incidence of psychotic disorders is higher in ethnic minorities groups. The 'ethnic density effect', in which living in a neighbourhood with a low own-group proportion increases the risk of psychosis, is one explanatory factor. The density effect in the ethno-religious and sectarian context of Northern Ireland has been found to be reversed, particularly for Catholics, in which there is harmful effect of high own-group density area…
The concepts of Ludwik Fleck and their application to the eukaryotic cell cycle
The concepts of Ludwik Fleck (1896–1961), a microbiologist, historian, and philosopher of medicine, can be used to analyze the conservative nature of scientific ideas. This is discussed and applied to ideas dominant in the understanding of the eukaryotic cell cycle. These are (a) the G1-phase restriction point as a regulatory element of the mammalian cell cycle, (b) the Rate Change Point proposed to exist in fission yeast, and (c) the proposal th…
The Platonist Christianity of Marius Victorinus
Marius Victorinus is the first representative of Platonist Christianity in the Latin church whose works display knowledge of Plotinus and Porphyry. Scholarship prior to the work of Pierre Hadot in the mid-twentieth century tended to treat him as an isolated figure, ignored by later Latin Christians who knew better how to moderate their Platonist borrowings. Scholars since then have been more willing to see Victorinus as earnest Christian who let …
Designing for deeper learning in a blended computer science course for middle school students
The focus of this research was to create and test an introductory computer science course for middle school. Titled “Foundations for Advancing Computational Thinking” (FACT), the course aims to prepare and motivate middle school learners for future engagement with algorithmic problem solving. FACT was also piloted as a seven-week course on Stanford’s OpenEdX MOOC platform for blended in-class learning. Unique aspects of FACT include balanced peda…
Cutting Both Ways: E. L. Doctorow's Critique of the Left
THE EXPERIMENTAL, POSTMODERN elements in E. L. Doctorow's novels are remarked upon by virtually all his critics. In most of his major novels the narrative voice is self-conscious and calls attention to itself. In his first novel, Welcome to Hard Times (1960), the narrator Blue is writing his story in old ledgers and reflects on his penchant, even obsession, for record keeping and wonders if the truth of events can be captured in words. Daniel Isa…

The Thesis and Dissertation in Graduate ESL Programs
Listings of over 200 graduate theses and dissertations in ESL completed since 1975 were studied to determine apparent topic areas and methodologies. Classification according to subject matter reveals a wide variety of topics. The favorites appear to be those areas which deal with pedagogy, like methods, techniques, and materials. Very few studies treat bilingualism, English as a second dialect, testing, or the use of language laboratories in ESL.…
