Building Trust in Governmental and Educational Authorities in Adolescence
Research on procedural justice shows that giving voice to citizens or experts, providing transparent explanations, and acting predictably fosters trust in authorities. Yet little is known about how these processes operate during adolescence. It remains unclear whether these aspects of authority behavior are relevant to trust-building at the onset of adolescence and how their importance evolves with age. This study reports findings from a cross-na…
Transitional impact of important life events among Czechs and Slovaks
This study explores the relationship between cultural life scripts and actual life stories of Czechs and Slovaks, building on prior research by Štěpánková et al. (Citation2020. Czech and Slovak life scripts: The rare case of two countries that used to be one. Memory, 28(10), 1204–1218) that examined the semantic knowledge of an ideal life within the Czech and Slovak cultures (cultural life scripts). The current study investigates the extent to wh…
The Role of Bureaucratic Procedures and ‘Caring Professionals’ in Fostering User Trust
The literature on user trust in social welfare systems appropriately highlights the quality of relationships with frontline workers and the perception of their skills and human qualities, which develop and evolve over time. However, it tends to place less emphasis on users’ perceptions of and experiences with the formal procedures within which these relational processes unfold. With this paper, we aim to contribute to knowledge on user (dis)trust…
Welfare Users’ Perceptions of Distributive Justice and Trust When Facing Institutional Enigma
The article examines the relationship between perceived distributive justice and trust in the welfare system within complex and self-contradictory policy setting. Based on thirty-three in-depth interviews with social assistance users in Poland and Czechia, we find that policy assemblages in those countries are experienced as confusing ‘institutional enigmas’. We identify four patterns linking perceptions of welfare system’s distributive justice a…
Affective and Cognitive Dimensions of Building Interpersonal and Political Trust in Adolescence
While political trust develops from an assessment of the performance of political institutions, interpersonal trust evolves in close interactions between individuals. Previous studies claim that both are based on affective and cognitive dimensions. However, their complexity and meaning are understudied, especially among adolescents and in different cultural and institutional contexts. The current research explores how early, middle, and late adol…
Adverse Effects of Meditation
Buddhist meditation practices, including Samadhi meditation, which forms the basis for mindfulness practice, are broadly promoted as pathways to wellbeing, but evidence of their adverse effects is emerging. In a single-group observational study with assessments of autonomic system before, during, and after Samadhi meditation, we explore the relationship between post-meditation nausea symptoms and the degree of change in autonomic system activity …
Relationship of Weight Concerns to Body Mass Index in a Tobacco Treatment Program
Objectives: Our aim was to examine the relationship between weight concerns (WC) and smoking cessation. Methods: WC was assessed before smoking cessation treatment in 671 adult patients who completed a 12-month follow-up visit at the Centre for Tobacco-Dependent, Prague, Czech Republic, from 2013 through 2019. We evaluated the abstinence rate at 12-month follow-up. Results: Among 669 patients with baseline WC (mean age, 43.4 years), 47% were wome…

Czech and Slovak life scripts
In this study, we examined cultural life scripts in two countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The cultural life script is semantic knowledge about culturally shared expectations regarding the order and timing of important life events during an idealised life course. For many decades, Slovakia and the Czech Republic were one country: Czechoslovakia. After a regime change in 1989 and the separation of the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993, …
