Work Orientations of Female Returners
Hakim's Preference Theory on the heterogeneity of the work-life preferences of women, and in particular its implicit assumption that a woman's preference to work or to stay at home is based on her personal choices, has frequently been criticized. Other researchers emphasize the constraining influence that a woman's personal, financial and family situation can have on her preferences. Vocational Training and Career Employment Precariousness in Great Britain, the Netherlands and Sweden
The skills, qualifications and credentials generated by educational systems are strongly related to labour market attainment. The centrality of the educational system for the structuring of individuals' life chances has generated a long-lived and intense debate around the proper design of educational systems. The purpose of this article is to examine whether vocational training provided within the educational system protects graduates against emp…
Couples’ Labour-Market Participation in the Netherlands
The Netherlands, a progressive country in many respects, has a surprisingly traditional division of labour between spouses. The husband’s traditional role of breadwinner is still largely unchallenged and until recently women’s participation in the labour market lagged behind neighbouring countries. In this chapter, we examine how couples organize the division of paid labour in the Netherlands and attempt to explain the variation between couples. …
Occupational Status Attainment in the Netherlands, 1920-1990 A Multinomial Logistic Analysis
Status attainment in the Netherlands is analysed using both linear regression and multinomial logistic (MNL) regression for male labour-market cohorts between 1920 and 1990. The quasi row and columns 2 mobility model (Logan, 1983; Goodman, 1979) is included in the MNL model, and a stereotyped ordered regression model (Anderson, 1984; DiPrete, 1990) is used for the covariates. The regression analyses indicate that the effect of father's occupation…
