Christine J Park, Joseph Shields et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Behavior in the…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 46

Shame-proneness refers to one's dispositional tendency to experience shame across a variety of situations. Shame-proneness is significantly related to a wide range of mental health disorders including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, substance abuse, and more. Attachment theory and interpersonal neurobiology suggest that secure attachment protects against shame-proneness, whereas insecure attachment contributes to shame-proneness. Howe…

Joseph J Shields, Peter J Delany et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Work Practice…•2015

In recent years there has been growing recognition of the role of trauma in substance abuse treatment; however, only 20% of outpatient treatment programs report offering trauma services. We conducted a secondary analysis of the 2012 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS) and explore how demographic, population served, and organization variables distinguish those programs that offer trauma services from those that do not. …

    Open Access•Joseph J Shields, Kirk M Broome et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 47

The relationship between personal religiousness and substance abuse treatment outcomes has emerged as an important issue in the public health arena. Using the 'moral community' perspective, a conceptual framework developed byStark, Kent, and Doyle (1982)to analyze the contextual effects of religion, we explore the degree to which religion influences two drug treatment outcome measures-critical retention and commitment to treatment. The data are d…

    Dean R Hoge, Joseph J Shields et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Religion•1995•Cited by: 5

A 1970 survey of American Catholic diocesan priests was replicated in 1985 and 1993, producing trend data on morale, theological and ecclesiological attitudes, and professionalization. Overall morale and happiness were higher in 1985 and 1993 than in 1970. Problems of overwork and of meeting the rising expectations of laity rose over time; they were greater in 1993 than earlier. Self-identity as professional men gradually increased. In 1993 the y…

    Dean R Hoge, Joseph J Shields et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Analysis•1988•Cited by: 4

A 1985 survey of American Catholic priests replicated a 1970 survey and permitted tests of earlier projections made by Schoenherr and Sorensen regarding the future of the Catholic priesthood. We found that the age distribution shifted toward older ages, as projected, but not quite as drastically as expected. Contrary to the projection, theological attitudes did not shift in the conservative direction; they became more modern, especially regarding…
