  • Religious Complexity in Nordic Public Spheres

I Furseth, Lene Kühle et al.•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Religion and…•2019

This article studies empirically the complexity of religion in the public sphere by systematically comparing the five Nordic countries. Sociologists debate if current trends in the West point to secularization or a return of religion (deprivatization, desecularization, or post-secularity). By drawing on the social science complexity reference, this article offers a critique of current scholarship and introduces the concept of religious complexity…

Based on a comparative project on media and religion across Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, this article analyzes relationships between religiosity and political attitudes in Scandinavia and how these connect with attitudes regarding the representation of Islam in various media. In response to Deacon and Stanyer’s article ‘Mediatization: Key Concept or Conceptual Bandwagon?’ we argue that they build their criticism on a simplified methodology. They mistake a media-centered approach for a media-centric one, and they do not capture how mediatization research engages with the complex relationship between changes in media and communication, on the one hand, and changes in various fields of culture and society on the other. W…

  • Mediatized Stories in Mediatized Worlds

    Open Access•Knut Lundby•CHAPTER•Mediatized Worlds•2014

Youth use digital media for self-representations in different life settings, and young people practise ‘digital storytelling’ in particular ‘mediatized worlds’. This book aims to explore the extent to which contemporary social worlds and lifeworlds are mediatized. The international Mediatized stories project may throw light on digital storytelling in mediatized worlds, and the dimensions of mediatized worlds — as laid out in the introduction to t…

Knut Lundby, Daniel Dayan•ARTICLE•Le Temps des médias•2004•Cited by: 1

The field analysed here is that of Anglicanism in Africa. • Media, religion and democratic participation: Community communication in Zimbabwe and Norway

    Open Access•Knut Lundby•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•1997•References: 3

How do people's references to religion and media shape democratic participation in small-scale communities? This research question is applied to pilot case studies across two continents, namely the growth point of Tsanzaguru in Zimbabwe and the municipality of Sør-Aurdal in Norway. In each community, ten `general influential opinion leaders' were interviewed ahead of the 1995 elections. `Religious belonging' (i.e. affiliation to various Christian…
