Beyond Innovation Niches
Amid mounting calls for socio-ecological transition, many social sciences studies have been exploring the processes of societal change. The well-known Science Technology Society studies (STS) approach focuses on the diffusion of innovation niches as an open-ended process ultimately leading to the stabilization of a new regime. Other works have suggested reversing the perspective, i.e., ‘thinking about transitions from the end’. This is a defining…
Maternal depression as catalyst for cooperation
This study investigates the hypothesis that perinatal depression could function as a catalyst for a mother to elicit cooperation from others in times of need (Hagen, 2002). We analyze data on social support and depression from 292 women in Uganda around the time of giving birth and find that a perceived lack of support, especially from the baby's father, is linked to a higher risk of depression in the mother. German maritime security governance
Besides the high number of attacks by Somali pirates, terrorists have threatened to disrupt Western maritime trade and oil and gas supplies in the Indian Ocean Region. This case study of German maritime security governance aims to examine these threats faced by Germany, and German countermeasures and preparedness. The German economy relies heavily on its international sea trade and Germany is home to the world's biggest container shipping compani…
A Laboratory Investigation of Networked Markets
When contracts are not perfectly enforceable, can interpersonal networks improve market efficiency? We introduce certain exogenous networks into laboratory markets in which traders can cheat in 'international' but not in 'domestic' transactions. We examine four network configurations, one of which has the potential to achieve 100% efficiency. Theoretical upper bounds correctly predict the main qualitative trade patterns across our network configu…
