  • A note on measures of aggregate demand adjusted for import intensity

    Open Access•Bruno Rocha•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2026

  • The great spatial reshuffling

Open Access•Bruno Rocha, Patrícia C Melo et al.•ARTICLE•European Planning Studies•2025

This study finds that local population growth caused by the development of the motorway network in Portugal is to be interpreted as a change in the spatial distribution of population within the country between 1981 and 2021. That is, local population gains correspond to losses in other municipalities, as the analysis does not identify any effects of motorways on international migration or natural growth. An extrapolation exercise using causal est…

  • Market Potential, Road Accessibility, and Firm Births

Open Access•Mauricio S de Carvalho, Patrícia C Melo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2025

This paper investigates the causal effects of road accessibility, measured by market potential, on firm births in Portuguese municipalities between 1991 and 2016, a period marked by significant road improvements. We address the endogeneity of market potential by employing instrumental variables within Poisson Pseudo‐maximum Likelihood estimates with fixed effects, which we refer to as “non‐local time‐variant historical instruments.” Our estimated…

  • The logic of distinction

Open Access•Madalena Meyer Resende, Bruno Rocha et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Política…•2024•References: 25

This article proposes a framework that captures the logic of status seeking and reassesses the influence of one of its key drivers: nationalism. Inspired by Bourdieu’s logic of distinction, the article conceptualises status as a form of social distinction and argues that nationalism influences status seeking based on variations in its external dimension. By examining the case of German nationalism, we illustrate how status-seeking practices such …

  • The Dark Side of Multimedia Devices

Open Access•Bruna Rocha, Bruno Rocha et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

There is growing concern about the relationship between screen use by young children and negative effects on their development, as children with developmental and socioemotional impairments tend to have difficulties in their relationships and increased academic problems. The aim of our study was to analyse the relationship between the use of multimedia devices and paediatric symptoms in children below 5 years old. Data from 534 Portuguese parents…

  • Motorways, local economic activity and commuting

Bruno Rocha, Patrícia C Melo et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2023

This paper investigates the causal effects of the development of the Portuguese motorway network between 1981 and 2011 on the size of the local economy and the commuting of workers. We use instrumental variables based on transport networks from the late 18th century and 1945 as sources of pseudo-random variation for the location of motorways. The analysis shows that motorways have a strong effect on cross-municipal worker mobility, in terms of bo…

  • What drives the allocation of motorways? Evidence from Portugal's fast-expanding network

Open Access•Bruno Rocha, Nuno Afonso et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Transport Geography•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This study investigates the factors that influenced the allocation of motorways across municipalities in mainland Portugal. Our analysis, based on Poisson Pseudo-maximum Likelihood models, suggests that population size and market potential in 1981 are important determinants of motorway density in 2020. Physical and geographical variables also help explain the spatial distribution of motorway investment, as terrain ruggedness and distance to the c…

  • Long-run suburbanization trends in Portugal

    Open Access•Bruno Rocha•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2022

Using census data from 1960 to 2021, this graphic reveals how suburban municipalities evolved from representing less than 19% of the population in mainland Portugal to almost 39%. In particular, suburban municipalities constitute the only group of municipalities for which doubling population size occurred more often than not. At the same time, Lisbon and Porto, the central cities of the two metropolitan areas, lost 32% and 24%, respectively, of t…

  • No Absurdo Do Abismo Religioso

  • A model for rhythm and timbre similarity in electronic dance music

Open Access•Maria Panteli, Bruna Rocha et al.•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•2017

Music similarity is a multidimensional concept to which so-called “sub-similarities”, such as timbre and rhythm similarity, contribute. In this study, two models are presented: one for timbre similarity, and one for rhythm similarity. The musical domain for which the models were established is Electronic Dance Music (EDM). The models extract feature values from segments of audio and calculate a distance between two segments based on their feature…

  • Como a Categoria De Atitude Condiciona a Metodologia Para O Estudo Das Ilocuções

Open Access•Tommaso Raso, Bruno Rocha et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Diadorim•2015

  • Fiscal policy in times of crisis

Marcos Cordeiro Pires, Manoel Carlos De Castro Pires et al.•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•2011•References: 3

The international financial crisis that hit the Brazilian economy in the third quarter of 2008 called forth several economic-policy responses. In the case of fiscal policy, expansionary measures rendered the existing fiscal target unviable, and it was formally reduced in April 2009. The purpose of this article is to analyse the macroeconomic effects of reducing the primary budget-surplus target and to evaluate its repercussions on the level of ac…
