Living with and beyond cancer
Purpose to provide a bicultural perspective on the views of people who have completed cancer treatment and, of health providers. Effect on attendance at breast cancer screening of adding a self administered questionnaire to the usual invitation to breast screening in southern England
STUDY OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of the research described in this paper was to ascertain whether inclusion of a self administered questionnaire with the usual invitation to routine breast screening affected screening uptake. Secondary aims included establishing appropriate questionnaire distribution and collection methods within the framework of the National Health Service Breast Screening Programme and optimisation of questionnaire design. Into the Community
The resettlement of people with learning disabilities (mental handicap) from long‐stay hospitals has been under way for a number of years in England. This process has generally been dominated by the exigencies of the available services. A needs‐led approach, emphasized in recent community care legislation, in which new services are sought on the basis of the specific requirements of service users, has been used infrequently for this purpose. Letting Go
Parents whose son or daughter has a mental handicap face a difficult decision about when is the right time to ‘let go’. Many are highly ambivalent, torn between their own wish to keep their son or daughter with them and their concern that he or she might need to leave home in order to develop greater independence. Making the break raises fundamental questions about relationships within the family and family members' needs for one another. This ar…
Politics and policies on self-help
This paper identifies and describes a few key milestones in the development of policies on self-help at an international level. At its core lies a paradox. Self-help groups are essentially a very local activity; they are generated by individuals coming together to help themselves and each other in their own local communities. They neither need nor are derived from international (or even national) policies for their development. Yet in the last fe…

Thinking about Participation
Although the idea of ‘participation’ has achieved widespread popularity in many contexts in recent years, there is little consensus on its purposes or effects. An examination of the literature in one area in which participation has been advocated (tenant participation in council housing management) shows that there are conflicting assumptions both about the participatory process and the results stemming from it. A new model of the process of part…
Decision-making by non-elected members
This paper draws attention to new provisions in the 1972 Local Government Act which enable non-elected persons to determine local authority policies, through their co-option on to sub-committees with delegated powers. It sets out these provisions in the light of previous legislation and discusses why they were introduced. It then points out one area of local authority administration in which they are likely to be implemented, involving new system…
