The Cities of the Plain: Urbanism in Ancient Western Thessaly
Toward a More Dynamic Modeling of Ancient Domestic Space: An Example from First-Millennium BCE Greece
Recent archaeological discussions of domestic space in a variety of cultural contexts have pointed out the limitations of the static models that have typically been used to discuss the arrangement of activities and their associated modes of social organization. Taking the example of the Greek world during the first millennium BCE, this article explores some of the insights that can be gained by reorienting attention toward a more dynamic understa…
Architectural Rhetoric and the Rhetoric of Architecture: Athens and Macedon in the Mid-4th Century bce
Like those studying other aspects of the ancient world, archaeologists working on housing frequently use textual evidence to provide a framework within which the archaeological material can be understood. This chapter suggests that the reverse can also be helpful, namely using archaeology to provide a context which facilitates a clearer understanding of some of the textual evidence. As an example, I choose three passages from Demosthenes which al…
Theoretical Approaches to the Archaeology of Ancient Greece: Manipulating Material Culture
In the modern world, objects and buildings speak eloquently about their creators. Status, gender identity, and cultural affiliations are just a few characteristics we can often infer about such material culture. But can we make similar deductions about the inhabitants of the first millennium BCE Greek world? Theoretical Approaches to the Archaeology of Ancient Greece offers a series of case studies exploring how a theoretical approach to the arch…

A real estate ‘market’ in Classical Greece? The example of town housing
In the past it has often been assumed that, although rental of real estate in Classical Greece was relatively common, sales of such property were not. This article challenges that assumption by looking in detail at a small group of inscriptions from Olynthos in the Chalkidiki, which date to the first half of the fourth century and record transactions involving houses in the city. By analysing these documents in conjunction with their archaeologic…
Greek Households under Roman Hegemony: The Archaeological Evidence
Abandoned but not forgotten: Gerritsen on the domestic lifecycle
The subject of Gerritsen's paper and the way in which it is presented invite comment on three main aspects: firstly, his theoretical stance, secondly the methodology he uses and thirdly, his conclusions regarding the farmsteads which he seeks to understand. Since my own specialism lies well outside the area and period with which his paper deals, I shall focus my discussion on the first two aspects
