  • Visualizing Surfaces, Surfacing Vision

    Open Access•R Coleman, Liz Oakley-Brown•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 13

In this Introduction to a special section on 'Visualizing Surfaces, Surfacing Vision', the authors argue that to conceive vision in the contemporary world it is necessary to examine its embedding within, expression via and organization on the surface. First, they review recent social and cultural theories to demonstrate how and why an attention to surfaces is salient today. Second, they consider how vision may be understood in terms of surfaces, …

  • Taxonomies of Travel and Martial Identity in Thomas Churchyard's A generall rehearsall of warres and ‘A Pirates Tragedie’ (1579)

    Liz Oakley-Brown•ARTICLE•Studies in Travel Writing•2008

Thomas Churchyard (1523?-1604)—a prolific soldier, author and translator—remains a relatively minor figure in accounts of early modern English travel writing. When invoked, he is commonly credited with producing triumphant descriptions of Elizabethan voyages, such as the account of Humphrey Gilbert's expedition to Newfoundland and A prayse, and reporte of Maister Martyne Forboishers voyage to Meta Incognita which were both published in 1578. Howe…

  • Titus Andronicus and the cultural politics of translation in early modern England

    Open Access•Liz Oakley-Brown, Liz Oakley‐Brown•ARTICLE•Renaissance Studies•2005

This essay argues that the material invocation of Ovid's Metamorphoses in The Most Lamentable Roman Tragedie of Titus Andronicus (c. 1594) initiates an interrogation of the cultural politics of translation in early modern England. By comparing Shakespeare's play with Edward Ravenscroft's seventeenth‐century revision, Titus Andronicus, or the Rape of Lavinia (first performed 1678, first published 1687), the discussion focuses on ways in which the …

  • Ovid's Metamorphoses and the Sexual Politics of Translation in Early Modern England

    Open Access•Liz Oakley-Brown•ARTICLE•Literature Compass•2004•References: 5

This article considers the relationship between women and Ovid's Metamorphoses in early modern England. Louise Schleiner states that one of ‘Englishwomen's favourite writings and modes of discourse to echo, tease into their texts, or handle revisionistically’ was ‘Ovid (the Metamorphoses, Heroides and the Amores in translation)’.1 But close, critical discussion of women's engagement with Ovid's Metamorphoses is a neglected area. Moving from conte…
