  • Geodiversity and resilience: A scoping review

Open Access•Maija Toivanen, Daniel Santos et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2026

Resilience thinking has become central to addressing environmental and societal challenges, yet it focuses primarily on ecological and social dimensions while physical foundations remain underrepresented. This systematic scoping review examined 90 geodiversity and geoheritage studies (2012–2025) analysing connections to resilience concepts. While most reviewed studies lack explicit resilience frameworks, they demonstrate extensive implicit resili…

  • (Dis)entangling (non)violence in resistance: Four areas of contestation

Open Access•Alexandre Christoyannopoulos, Daniel Santos•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Power•2026

Both ‘violence’ and ‘nonviolence’ are contested terms. Naming ‘violence’ or ‘nonviolence’ in resistance struggles can often be at the core of what the struggle is about. Such contestations are therefore inevitably inherently political and normative, never just scientific or theoretical. This article demonstrates this by discussing four areas of contestation of these terms: firstly in the variety of phenomena that can be labelled ‘violence’; secon…

  • Learning from Accidents: Spatial Intelligence Applied to Road Accidents with Insights from a Case Study in Setúbal District, Portugal

Open Access•Pedro Nogueira, Marcelo Silva et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2023

Road traffic accidents are a major concern for modern society with a high toll on human life and involve hard to account economic consequences. New knowledge can be obtained from combining GIS tools with machine learning and artificial intelligence, developing what is, in this work, identified as spatial intelligence. This approach is tested in a case study of Setúbal district, Portugal, for the period of 2016 to 2019. Departing from a heatmap an…

  • Formative Assessment of Social-Emotional Skills Using Rubrics: A Review of Knowns and Unknowns

Open Access•Gina Pancorbo, Ricardo Primi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2021

Educational practitioners have been increasingly interested in the use of formative assessment and rubrics to develop social-emotional skills in children and adolescents. Although social-emotional rubrics are nowadays commonly used, a thorough evaluation of their psychometric properties has not been conducted. In this scoping review, we examine the knowns and unknowns of the use of formative assessment approaches and rubrics in social-emotional l…

Loes Abrahams, Gina Pancorbo et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Assessment•2019

The development and promotion of social-emotional skills in childhood and adolescence contributes to subsequent well-being and positive life outcomes. However, the assessment of these skills is associated with conceptual and methodological challenges. This review discusses how social-emotional skill measurement in youth could be improved in terms of skills' conceptualization and classification, and in terms of assessment techniques and methodolog…

  • The concept of human nature in Noam Chomsky

Open Access•Norman Roland Madarasz, Daniel Santos et al.•ARTICLE•Veritas (Porto Alegre)•2018•References: 3

One of the constants in Noam Chomsky’s philosophical, linguistic and ethical positions is the existence of what he calls “human nature”. Following Marx, Darwin and last century’s revolutions in the social sciences, human nature has been one of the most contested conceptual holdovers from modern European philosophy. Chomsky’s discoveries and models on syntax and language make up one of the frameworks to most critically offset the traditional moral…

Cristine Campos De Xavier Pinto, Daniel Domingues Dos Santos et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2017

We estimate the impact of having attended centre-based daycare institutions during early childhood on math test scores at the fourth grade level of elementary school. We find evidence that daycare attendance has a net impact on math proficiency, and that the effects are heterogeneous. The effect of daycare and kindergarten attendance on proficiency varies according to mother’s education. The effects of the impact of daycare vary from −0.28 standa…

This study aimed to jointly analyse moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentariness, and their correlates, in children within their school contexts, using a multivariate multilevel approach. The sample comprises 499 Portuguese children (284 girls) from 23 schools. MVPA and sedentary time were estimated by accelerometer. A set of predictor variables from both child and school levels was tested. Overall, schools explained a small am…
