  • Archives of loss: Bodies, narratives, and dead feminist peace organizations

Open Access•Ruth Preser, Sarai B Aharoni et al.•ARTICLE•Social movement studies•2026

This paper examines the archival remnants of defunct Israeli feminist peace organizations, exploring how social movements sustain memory amid erasure and political violence. Based on a collaborative feminist ethnography (2019–2021) involving archival collections and interviews with Jewish and Palestinian feminist peace activists, the study traces six defunct organizations that were active between 1987 and 2018. We argue that the fate of feminist …

  • Scientific Ritual: The Institutional Review Boards for Human Clinical Trials in Israel

    Open Access•H Eyal•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology Quarterly•2025•References: 19

This ethnographic study analyzes Israeli Institutional Review Boards (IRBs’) main practices and discourses. I describe IRB operations as bureaucratic rituals derived from idealized scientific values, with physician‐scientist members serving as gatekeepers who perform boundary work to preserve professional independence. The findings show how temporal‐spatial bureaucratic rituals separate scientists from nonscientists across different phases of the…

  • Smaller Goals Were Achieved: Feminist Peace Archives in Israel and Communal Methods of Repair

    Open Access•Sarai B Aharoni, H Eyal et al.•ARTICLE•Global Studies Quarterly•2024•References: 5

The article engages with the potential of feminist archiving-as-activism as a communal method of repair that can enable a more responsible research agenda toward women’s resistance to armed conflict. The study is based on a local, dialogical approach and on qualitative data obtained through a series of 35 interviews with Israeli feminist peace activists, scholars and archivists and on an ethnographic survey of 11 Feminist Peace Archives (FPAs) co…

  • The Archival Phase in Feminist Organizations: Methodological Suggestions

    Open Access•H Eyal, Sarai B Aharoni et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 29

The article is based on a series of interviews (61) and a multi-sited ethnography conducted during 2019-2021 which traced archival records of 20 feminist organizations in Israel: local women's peace organizations (FPAs) and Rape Crisis Centres (RCCs). We describe the study and the complex methodological concerns and meta-questions relating to the study of feminist community archives in relation to content (types of testimonials or records), metho…

  • Out of Compassion or Out of Rights? A Story about an Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Human Clinical Trial

    Open Access•H Eyal•ARTICLE•Medicine Anthropology Theory•2021

This article examines the intersection of compassion and rights, and how the two concepts are constituted and wielded in the context of human clinical trials. Doron, an ALS patient who was recruited to a clinical trial, believed that he had the right to post-trial treatment according to the wording of an informed consent form he signed before joining the trial. However, the biotech company sponsoring the trial instead offered him 'compassionate u…

  • Humanitarian Aid, Security and Ethics

Open Access•H Eyal, Limor Samimian-Darash et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Extreme Anthropology•2020

The article examines the relationship between humanitarianism, security, and ethics in the case of the provision of medical humanitarian aid by Israel to casualties from the Syrian civil war, between 2013 and 2018. We argue that this humanitarian project differs from the type of humanitarian intervention commonly seen in conflict zones and can be identified as a new form of humanitarian governance. Our case study deals with humanitarian care prov…

  • Unintended Securitization

    Open Access•H Eyal, Limor Samimian-Darash•ARTICLE•Conflict and Society•2019

In this article, we examine statements by state officials and individuals from the military and the medical establishment regarding the provision of medical aid by Israel to casualties from the Syrian Civil War. We argue discussions of this project have been characterized by three different discourses, each dominant at different times, which we classify as military, medical, and political-security. We propose “unintended securitization” to descri…
