“Latter-Day Slavery”
My research highlights little-known aspects of African American participation in the mobilization on behalf of women’s suffrage in California, an issue of vital importance to African Americans. The history of suffrage in the United States is marked by varying degrees of denial of voting rights to African Americans. In California, African Americans were pivotal participants in three major suffrage campaigns. Based on black women’s support for the …
How Should AI Be Developed, Validated, and Implemented in Patient Care
Should an artificial intelligence (AI) program that appears to have a better success rate than human pathologists be used to replace or augment humans in detecting cancer cells? We argue that some concerns-the "black-box" problem (ie, the unknowability of how output is derived from input) and automation bias (overreliance on clinical decision support systems)-are not significant from a patient's perspective but that expertise in AI is required to…
Yoko Tawada and Reading the Strange(r): ‘Von Der Muttersprache Zur Sprachmutter’ and ‘Das Fremde Aus Der Dose’
Yoko Tawada, who writes in both German and Japanese, often uses images of reading to help her explore what she designates as exophony, that is, a condition of living, speaking, and writing outside one's mother tongue. The more closely Tawada's characters read German, however, the less they are able to feel at home in it. Her narratives often portray ‘Japanese’ narrators in German settings who struggle to make sense of a system of visual symbols t…

Representations of India on Jacobean Popular Stages
What do the terms “India” and “Indian” signify? How has India, conceptualized as a distinct subcontinent both contained within and separate from Asia, been framed by and manifested in theatrical representation? This article examines the portrayal of India in early seventeenth-century popular theatre in London, specifically in how the image of India is invoked in two of the lord mayors' shows written for the City of London by the playwright Thomas…

The Economics of Roscas and Intrahousehold Resource Allocation
This paper investigates individual motives to participate in rotating savings and credit associations (roscas). Detailed evidence from roscas in a Kenyan slum (Nairobi) suggests that most roscas are predominantly composed of women, particularly those living in a couple and earning an independent income. We propose an explanation of this based on conflictual interactions within the household. Participation in a rosea is a strategy a wife employs t…

The Insider As Outsider: Ricarda Huch’s Autobiographical Texts
Current discussions about how Germans can live together harmoniously arise from a long tradition of ideas about the meaning of Germany as a cultural, political, or geographic entity. Especially deserving of attention with regard to such debates are earlier texts which have challenged the insider/outsider dichotomy in positing a collective German identity, writings which simultaneously represent and under‐mine the term ‘German’. A set of narrative…
