It Takes Money to Make MPs: Evidence from 160 Years of British Campaign Spending
We study electoral campaigns over the long run, through the lens of their spending. We build a novel, exhaustive dataset on U.K. general elections from 1857 to 2017. Saving the media: Capitalism, Crowdfunding, and Democracy
The media are in crisis. Not only the print press but the entire news production chain. Faced with growing competition and inexorably declining advertising revenue, newspapers, radio and TV news operations, and pure Internet players are all in search of a new model. Based on an innovative study of the media in Europe and the United States, this book proposes a new business model, the nonprofit media organization, midway between a foundation and a…

Aid Volatility and Macro Risks in Low-Income Countries
The report argues that aid volatility is an important source of volatility for the poorest countries. Following a method already applied by the Agence Française de Développement, the report argues that loans to LICs should incorporate a floating grace period, which the country could draw upon when hit by a shock. The definition of a shock should include aid uncertainty, along with others such as commodity shocks and natural disasters. The idea is…
