Adrian Schenker•ARTICLE•Hebrew Bible and Ancient Israel•2015

Does the deuteronomic formula »the locality where Yhwh places his name/made his name to dwell« specifically indicate number (one place), or does it carry generic significance (such places generally)? In 1 Kings 18, MT implies a numerical meaning, whereas LXX implies a generic one. LXX may be more original in this respect.

The narrative of Solomon’s dream at Gibeon occurs in the Hebrew Bible in two parallel passages, 1 Kings 3, 2-15 and 2 Chron 1, 2-13. The Old Greek translation differs on several points from the Hebrew Masoretic texts, both in Kings and in Chronicles. These differences are not due to the Greek translators. On the contrary, they are faithfully rendering their underlying Hebrew text, their Vorlage. Thus the narrative existed in four different Hebrew…

  • Jeroboam's Rise and Fall in the Hebrew and Greek Bible

Adrian Schenker•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2008

The Jeroboam narrative occurs in two main forms, one in the Hebrew Bible, 1 Kings 11-14, and the other in the Greek Bible, 3 Kingdoms 12:24a-z. This difference gave rise to a scholarly debate over many decades. In a recent article in the JSJ, Marvin A. Sweeney has proposed a new method in order to settle this old problem. In this present note, his proposal and arguments are evaluated, and it is suggested that Sweeney has not taken into account al…

  • La rédaction longue du livre de Jérémie

    Adrian Schenker•ARTICLE•Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses•1994
