Regional borders, local unemployment, and life satisfaction
In this paper, we provide novel evidence on the effect of local unemployment rate on life satisfaction. With this, we contribute to the expanding literature that aims to understand the role of the local labor market's conditions for individual well‐being. This information can be used to only analyze the impact of regional economic policies, as well as to understand individuals' behavior and reactions to policy changes. In concrete, we investigate…
Gender, Loneliness and Happiness during Covid-19
Gender, loneliness and happiness during Covid-19
We analyse a measure of loneliness from a representative sample of German individuals interviewed in both 2017 and at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Both men and women felt lonelier during the COVID-19 pandemic than they did in 2017. The pandemic more than doubled the gender loneliness gap: women were lonelier than men in 2017, and the 2017-2020 rise in loneliness was far larger for women. This rise is mirrored in life-satisfacti…
I Perceive Therefore I Demand: The Formation of Inequality Perceptions and Demand for Redistribution
This paper shows that perceptions of inequality matter for demand for redistribution and investigates how individuals form their perceptions. Using data from the ISSP, we present new evidence on the significant changes of perceptions of inequality for more than 20 countries during the last three decades and how these are not in synch with changes in objective inequality. Rather than indicating misperceptions, these discrepancies reflect a broader…
I Perceive Therefore I Demand: The Formation of Inequality Perceptions and Demand for Redistribution
This paper investigates the link between inequality and demand for redistribution by looking at how individuals form their perceptions of inequality. Most of the literature analyzing demand for redistribution has focused on objective inequality, rather than subjective perceptions of inequality. However, a model that links demand for redistribution to subjective inequality is needed, given that recent empirical research has shown a growing gap bet…

Happiness Quantified: A Satisfaction Calculus Approach
This book deals with satisfaction analysis, the way humans evaluate many aspects of their situation. It focuses on that which precedes decision taking, i.e., judgements and evaluations, likes and dislikes, and from which preference orderings originate. Although written by two economists, the book is intended for social scientists with the aim of promoting discussion between the two disciplines. It presents methodology by which satisfaction can be…

Income Satisfaction Inequality and its Causes
Linking Measured Risk Aversion to Individual Characteristics
From the stated price of a specified lottery in three unrelated surveys we deduce individuals’ Arrow‐Pratt measure of risk aversion. We find that risk aversion indeed falls with income and wealth. Entrepreneurs are less risk averse than employees, civil servants are more risk averse than private sector employees, and women are more risk averse than men. A simple lottery question appears a promising survey instrument to explore risk attitude and i…
