Increasing costs of institutional care for the aged have occasioned a variety of government cost containment measures. People with senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type (SDAT) will be the principal group to suffer from cutbacks. SDAT patients are usually eligible for Intermediate Care Facilities (ICFs), rather than Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) and therefore for lower reimbursement. The Aging of the Family
A central policy issue is the development of services for older people in the United States, specifically the extent to which families can be expected to continue to provide the bulk of needed services vis-à-vis community responsibility. Though there has been thorough documenta tion of continuing responsible family behavior toward their aged, the development of services provided by the community has been hampered by the myth of widespread family …

Basic Data Requirements for Geriatric Institutions and Services
Long-term care institutions are being patterned inappropriately on the medical model. They have evolved as a patchwork of other types of institutions and as yet have no clear value system of their own. The characteristics of the populations served, the reasons for admissions, their psychological and social deprivations, and the fact that institutional care is essentially a living arrangement point to a greater emphasis on enrichment services, i.e…
