  • Orinoco: Retrieving a River Delta Network with the Fast Marching Method and Python

Open Access•Charlie Marshak, Marc Simard et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2020

We present Orinoco, an open-source Python toolkit that applies the fast-marching method to derive a river delta channel network from a water mask and ocean delineation. We are able to estimate flow direction, along-channel distance, channel width, and network-related metrics for deltaic analyses including the steady-state fluxes. To demonstrate the capabilities of the toolkit, we apply our software to the Wax Lake and Atchafalaya River Deltas usi…

  • Harnessing Big Data to Support the Conservation and Rehabilitation of Mangrove Forests Globally

    Open Access•Thomas A Worthington, Dominic A Andradi‐Brown et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2020

Mangrove forests are found on sheltered coastlines in tropical, subtropical, and some warm temperate regions. These forests support unique biodiversity and provide a range of benefits to coastal communities, but as a result of large-scale conversion for aquaculture, agriculture, and urbanization, mangroves are considered increasingly threatened ecosystems. Scientific advances have led to accurate and comprehensive global datasets on mangrove exte…

    Open Access•Thomas A Worthington, Dominic A Andradi‐Brown et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2020

(One Earth 2, 429–443; May 22, 2020) In the preparation of the originally published perspective, text from an internal Nature Conservancy working document was unfortunately included without proper attribution to its authors, who are not co-authors of this paper. In the online version of the article, the section “Prioritization of Conservation and Rehabilitation” has now been corrected to cite the framework developed by McGowan et al. (as referenc…

  • Validation of the Combined Comorbidity Index of Charlson and Elixhauser to Predict 30-Day Mortality Across ICD-9 and ICD-10

    Marc Simard, Jenny W Sun et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2018•References: 5

OBJECTIVES: To validate and compare performance of an International Classification of Diseases, tenth revision (ICD-10) version of a combined comorbidity index merging conditions of Charlson and Elixhauser measures against individual measures in the prediction of 30-day mortality. To select a weight derivation method providing optimal performance across ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding systems. RESEARCH DESIGN: Using 2 adult population-based cohorts of pa…

  • Standard Period Life Table Used to Compute the Life Expectancy of Diseased Subpopulations: More Confusing Than Helpful

Linda Perron, Marc Simard et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 16

Life expectancy (LE) based on a period life table (PLT) traditionally serves as a general population summary metric. It is, however, becoming more frequently reported for chronically afflicted subpopulations. In general populations, there is always an obvious real cohort sharing the hypothetical PLT cohort characteristics, and the LE estimate is intuitively understood as that real cohort mean survival time, assuming constancy of death risks. In d…

Intellectuals, fascism and anti-modernity in the 1930s in France, Marc Simard. In the debate on the « fascism » of French intellectuals in the 1930s, the author suggests a shift in perspectives. Although the per-sonalist journals such as Esprit or L'Ordre Nouveau did not actually share the fascist fascination of intellectuals such as Brasillach and Drieu La Rochelle, they did have a common features : the rejection of modernity, the reaction again…
