  • The face inversion effect or the face upright effect

Open Access•Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2023

The face inversion effect (FIE) refers to the observation that presenting stimuli upside-down impairs the processing of faces disproportionally more than other mono-oriented objects. This has been taken as evidence that processing of faces and objects differ qualitatively. However, nearly all FIE studies are based on comparing individuation of upright faces, which most people are rather good at, with individuation of objects most people are much …

Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach•ARTICLE•Cahiers du monde russe•2018

The Soviet guerrilla movement was one of the strongest in history. Half a million fighters, who killed many tens of thousands of Germans, but also locals, derailed thousands of trains and demolished thousands of locomotives. Masha Cerovic provides a first‐rate, up‐to‐date history of their struggle. The strength of Cerovic’s study lies in its sources. While she rarely refers to postwar published memoirs, her work draws mainly on archival records o…

Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach•ARTICLE•Cahiers du monde russe•2017•Cited by: 1

Subject to Christian Ingrao’s book are Nazi imaginations of Eastern Europe in a future during and after Germanization. Among other aspects, he is interested in the emotions involved in this utopia. The volume deals with the essence of German ethnic policies in the East. The study starts with a chronological survey of Nazi plans for German settlement in Polish and Soviet areas and for the removal of local populations deemed undesirable. This is fo…

  • Holocaust Landscapes

    Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach•ARTICLE•German History•2017

This book offers a fresh view at the German persecution of European Jews by looking at spatial aspects. Drawing from a wide range of archives, it is primarily based on diaries and published memoirs of, and especially postwar interviews with, persecuted Jews, supplemented by scholarly literature. The author concentrates on demonstrating ‘the diverse range of victim experiences, spatial strategies of survival and the shifting landscapes of the Holo…

  • Forced labor, German violence and Jews

    Open Access•Christian Gerlach•CHAPTER•Extermination of the European Jews•2016

Many scholars have argued that the murder of Jews in Europe defied all economic logic, violated Nazi economic interests and contradicted their war effort. Blanket statements about, for example, the “fundamentally anti-economic character of the [Nazi] genocide” are popular but untenable. Others have offered arbitrary and contradictory interpretations about what had primacy – the war economy or racist ideology. This shows how problematic it is to a…

  • The Extermination of the European Jews

    Open Access•Christian Gerlach•BOOK•Extermination of the European Jews•2016

This major reinterpretation of the Holocaust surveys the destruction of the European Jews within the broader context of Nazi violence against other victim groups. Christian Gerlach offers a unique social history of mass violence which reveals why particular groups were persecuted and what it was that connected the fate of these groups and the policies against them. He explores the diverse ideological, political and economic motivations which lay …

    Christian Gerlach•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2016

The study under review here is a synthesis that tries to integrate all of the events that Mark Levene regards as genocide, together with many other cases of mass violence, in much of Europe over more than forty years. Geographically the work concentrates on what Levene calls the European “rimlands”: the Balkans (minus much of Romania and Greece), Anatolia, the Caucasus, the Baltic region, Ukraine, Belarus, and parts of Poland. Yet at times the na…

  • Famine responses in the world food crisis 1972–5 and the World Food Conference of 1974

Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach•ARTICLE•European Review of History Revue…•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 1

In the early 1970s, there was scarcity in the world grain market, soaring prices and famines in several countries of Asia and Africa. The commercial grain trade was expanded at the expense of food aid. After a brief look at policies addressing the situation in terms of modernised methods of agricultural production for small producers, the article sketches how such policies also affected relief efforts, from the low availability for food aid, the …

  • Annexations in Europe and the Persecution of Jews, 1939–1944

Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach•ARTICLE•East Central Europe•2012

This contribution tries to explain why Jews were persecuted earlier or more fiercely in territories annexed by a state during World War II than in the mainland of that state. The case-studies covered are Nazi Germany, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and the USSR. It is argued that internationally, similar policies of incorporation, especially the replacement of existing elites and the process of bringing in new settlers, worked against the Jews. Asid…

  • Extremely Violent Societies: Mass Violence in the Twentieth-Century World

    Open Access•Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach•BOOK•Extremely Violent Societies•2010

In this groundbreaking book Christian Gerlach traces the social roots of the extraordinary processes of human destruction involved in mass violence throughout the twentieth century. He argues that terms such as 'genocide' and 'ethnic cleansing' are too narrow to explain the diverse motives and interests that cause violence to spread in varying forms and intensities. From killings and expulsions to enforced hunger, collective rape, strategic bombi…

  • State Violence – Violent Societies

    Open Access•Christian Gerlach, Nicolas Werth•CHAPTER•Beyond Totalitarianism•2008

The academic book market certainly does not lack scholarly analyses comparing Nazism and Stalinism, and, many of these analyses address the issue of mass violence, the topic of this essay. The particularly sensitive nature of our topic and the controversial outcomes of past attempts to compare German and Soviet violence require some specific methodological reflections. On this basis, we try to contribute to a new and perhaps more conciliatory app…

  • Beyond Totalitarianism: Stalinism and Nazism Compared

    Open Access•Fitzpatrick, Yoram Gorlizki et al.•BOOK•Beyond Totalitarianism•2008

In essays written jointly by specialists on Soviet and German history, the contributors to this book rethink and rework the nature of Stalinism and Nazism and establish a new methodology for viewing their histories that goes well beyond the now-outdated twentieth-century models of totalitarianism, ideology, and personality. Doing the labor of comparison gives us the means to ascertain the historicity of the two extraordinary regimes and the wreck…
