Mapping Stone Age Sites by Topographical Modelling
Åsa M. Larsson
During 2009 not less than three doctoral dissertations explored the Swedish Middle Neolithic. Two of these research efforts are reviewed in the following. sa M. Larsson's and Kim von Hackwitz's books encompass the same theme: the relationship between the so-called Pitted Ware culture and the Battle (or Boat) Axe culture. The two projects are very different in their premises, their research methods, and their conclusions

Early Holocene bark-stripping damages as an indicator of large herbivores
A unique assemblage consisting of 113 pine samples collected from a submerged Mesolithic landscape in the Haväng area, southern Sweden, was examined to assess the presence of large herbivores, as well as changes in wild-game population density and composition. Bark-stripping damages on prehistoric trees is an extremely underutilized source of information about past game-population dynamics, yet our analyzes of wood samples – dated to around 10 50…
Lost at the bottom of the lake. Early and Middle Mesolithic leister points found in the bog Rönneholms Mosse, southern Sweden
During the Early and Middle Mesolithic the bog Rnneholms Mosse, situated in central Scania, southernmost Sweden, was part of a large and shallow lake. It filled up with organic material over a long time, lasting until the middle part of the Atlantic period. Due to large-scale peat extraction in the bog, surveys and excavations have been conducted for a number of years. Besides a large number of small campsites, numerous slotted points, harpoon an…
Knowledge from the ancient sea – a long-term perspective of human impact on aquatic life in Mesolithic Scandinavia
Lately, evidence for early-Holocene emerging sedentism has been suggested among foragers in Northern Europe. The core of this suggested sedentism lies in the increasing dependency on large-scale fishing and mass consumption of fish and a territorial behaviour associated with access to the best fishing locations. This territoriality might also be associated with increasing numbers of people settling and living in Northern Europe at this time. In t…
The School-to-Work Transition in Developing Countries
Youth bulges in developing countries may carry both a potential for growth via demographic dividends, and ticking political time bombs, depending on the success of authorities in providing youth with adequate opportunities as they transit into the labour markets of the twenty-first century. In this article I examine the theoretical and empirical research on school-to-work transitions (SWT) in developing countries. After a discussion of the attemp…
Shoreline Displacement, Coastal Environments and Human Subsistence in the Hanö Bay Region during The Mesolithic
Southern Scandinavia experienced significant environmental changes during the early Holocene. Shoreline displacement reconstructions and results from several zooarchaeological studies were used to describe the environmental changes and the associated human subsistence and settlement development in the Hanö Bay region of southern Sweden during the Mesolithic. GIS-based palaeogeographic reconstructions building on shoreline displacement records fro…
A submerged Mesolithic lagoonal landscape in the Baltic Sea, south-eastern Sweden – Early Holocene environmental reconstruction and shore-level displacement based on a multiproxy approach
When solidarity fails
Shoreline displacement and human resource utilization in the southern Baltic Basin coastal zone during the early Holocene
Along parts of the Hanö Bay coast in south-eastern Sweden, remains of a submerged landscape can be found down to depths of almost 25 m b.s.l. The coastal landscape was formed during two periods of lowered water levels in the Baltic Basin: the Yoldia Sea and the Initial Littorina Sea stages. In order to reconstruct the local environment and shoreline displacement during the Yoldia Sea and Ancylus Lake stages, sediment sequences were obtained at 4.…
Assessing the damage of an archaeological site
Archaeology and the unstoppable excavation machine. A Swedish point of view
In trying to understand why archaeology is so strongly associated with the method of excavation, this paper examines different relationships between excavation, archaeology, archaeologists and modern society

An archaeology of material stories. Dioramas as illustration and the desire of a thingless archaeology
No matter what kind of archaeologist you think you are, Ingold's text evokes emotional and intellectual reactions concerning a core of archaeology: how to deal scientifically with the material world. It pinpoints some serious problems within today's archaeology, not least field archaeology. Given this, I will try to comment on Ingold's text from a practical archaeological point of view. Before I turn to the tangible fields of sand, clay, stone fr…
