The intangible benefits of criminal mentorship
Individuals who report having had a mentor also tend to report higher levels of criminal achievement. However, prior studies focused on indirect yet tangible outcomes of mentorship, telling us little about the direct – though potentially intangible – benefits of these relationships to the mentee. In this study, we analyse the content of 28 life story narratives of offenders to examine the effects of mentor-mentee relationships. Half of the partic…

Exploring self-regulated learning during middle school: Views of parents and students on parents’ educational support at home
The transition period from elementary to middle school is challenging. Students are expected to be more autonomous. To cope with these increased levels of autonomy, self-regulated learning skills might help. Previous research has shown that parents play a crucial role in students’ self-regulated learning development. However, research focusing on parental involvement during middle school and the ways in which parents support self-regulated learni…

Toward Trash That Thinks: Product Tags for Environmental Management
In this article, we explore several options for linking information technology to materials and products through the use of bar codes and radio‐frequency identification (RFID) tags, and the implications for product life‐cycle management. We also describe tests with existing and modified tags, both on and inside products, as would be needed for environmental management applications. Bar codes are cheap and have an existing infrastructure; RFID tag…
Soviet and Post-Soviet Environmental Management: Lessons from a Case Study on Lead Pollution
Through a case study on lead pollution in the former Soviet Union, the linkage of policy, environmental science, and environmental management is explored, and compared with the US experience. Soviet bans on leaded gasoline and lead-based paint appear to have been effective. Regional governments, in cooperation with the petroleum industry, are taking the initiative in phasing out leaded gasoline, to some extent in defiance of federal policy. Probl…
The Industrial Ecology of Lead and Electric Vehicles
The lead battery has the potential to become one of the first examples of a hazardous product managed in an environmentally acceptable fashion. The tools of industrial ecology are helpful in identifying the key criteria that an ideal lead‐battery recycling system must meet maximal recovery of batteries after use, minimal export of used batteries to countries where environmental controls are weak, minimal impact on the health of communities near l…
