Satellite-detected large CO 2 release in southwestern North America during the 2020–2021 drought and associated wildfires
Southwestern North America (SWNA) continuously experienced megadroughts and large wildfires in 2020 and 2021. Here, we quantified their impact on the terrestrial carbon budget using net biome production (NBP) estimates from an ensemble of atmospheric inversions assimilating in-situ CO 2 and Carbon Observatory – 2 (OCO-2) satellite XCO 2 retrievals (OCO-2 v10 MIP Extension), two satellite-based gross primary production (GPP) datasets, and two fire…
Global Carbon Budget 2023
Accurate assessment of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and their redistribution among the atmosphere, ocean, and terrestrial biosphere in a changing climate is critical to better understand the global carbon cycle, support the development of climate policies, and project future climate change. Here we describe and synthesize data sets and methodology to quantify the five major components of the global carbon budget and their uncertai…

Siberian 2020 heatwave increased spring CO 2 uptake but not annual CO 2 uptake
Siberia experienced an unprecedented strong and persistent heatwave in winter to spring of 2020. Using bottom–up and top–down approaches, we evaluated seasonal and annual CO 2 fluxes of 2020 in the northern hemisphere (north of 30 °N), focusing on Siberia where the pronounced heatwave occurred. We found that, over Siberia, CO 2 respiration loss in response to the pronounced positive winter temperature anomaly was greater than in previous years. H…
Global Carbon Budget 2020
Accurate assessment of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions andtheir redistribution among the atmosphere, ocean, and terrestrial biospherein a changing climate – the “global carbon budget” – is important tobetter understand the global carbon cycle, support the development ofclimate policies, and project future climate change. Here we describe andsynthesize data sets and methodology to quantify the five major componentsof the global carbon…
Near-real-time monitoring of global CO2 emissions reveals the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting human activities, and in turn energy use and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions. Here we present daily estimates of country-level CO 2 emissions for different sectors based on near-real-time activity data. The key result is an abrupt 8.8% decrease in global CO 2 emissions (−1551 Mt CO 2 ) in the first half of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. The magnitude of this decrease is larger than during previous ec…
Biofuel burning and human respiration bias on satellite estimates of fossil fuel CO 2 emissions
The satellites that have been designed to support the monitoring of fossil fuel CO 2 emissions aim to systematically measure atmospheric CO 2 plumes generated by intense emissions from large cities, power plants and industrial sites. These data can be assimilated into atmospheric transport models in order to estimate the corresponding emissions. However, plumes emitted by cities and powerplants contain not only fossil fuel CO 2 but also significa…

Contribution of semi-arid ecosystems to interannual variability of the global carbon cycle
Can we reconcile atmospheric estimates of the Northern terrestrial carbon sink with land-based accounting
The ERA‐40 re‐analysis
ERA‐40 is a re‐analysis of meteorological observations from September 1957 to August 2002 produced by the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in collaboration with many institutions. The observing system changed considerably over this re‐analysis period, with assimilable data provided by a succession of satellite‐borne instruments from the 1970s onwards, supplemented by increasing numbers of observations from aircraft, ocea…
